Re: Alaska winter Chinook changes

The discussion wandered from moving fish to winter, into the most prevalent reason why we shouldn't, which is the perceived threat that won't be enough Chinook retention days, and we could loose coho days. Where we've gone from there is,,,why don't we consider other options to lengthening out the su...

Re: Alaska winter Chinook changes

Your right Carojae, this has wandered from moving fish to winter, but only because more or less all the issues are tied together. Can't move fish from summer, without talking about the dynamics there too. Agree 100% on unity, we are nothing without it. Lastly, a very good question about the treaty, ...

Re: Alaska winter Chinook changes

Silver T, I can't make it clear enough that in no way was I swiping at down south trollers with the pirate comments. I feel for you boys, I really do. My frustration lies with the hordes and hordes of sport enthusiasts that make those comments. I've been over and visited their chatrooms. That, and e...

Re: Alaska winter Chinook changes

Ok,,, 1) This,,,is WHY I've asked ATA to moderate the calculation of the feedback. So we can have an impartial vote counter. there will be no accepting the answer " I" want, it will be a fair count. We know how many total trollers there are, and the information we receive will tell us all ...

Re: Alaska winter Chinook changes

Absolutely agree Once and Future. It would be nice if the discussion could follow a positive note. There's a complex array of changes that have been long over do. Statistics indicate that in the winter fishery, 80+ percent of the fish are harvested on the Sitka line. Even in this small stat. area, t...

Re: Alaska winter Chinook changes

I'm not ashamed to tell how bad I got screwed. I tried hard. Daylight till dark power trolling the first day caught 2 kings, and 4 coho on this end. I know a lot of guys with the same luck, all down the coast. I remember discussing this in meetings before. I was pushing for measures that would have ...

Re: Alaska winter Chinook changes

Dang right the timing is good. We have lots to talk about. Like what measures we can take to lengthen out the summer Chinook fishery, should we move some fish to winter, how we can better spread winter out to more than one statistical area, and last but not least,,,, that we are NOT pirates up here ...

Re: Alaska winter Chinook changes

Price for July 1- 4.00 lb. when it's been well over 7 all spring long. This in advance of the usual glut. Season expected around 5 days long. Last year we didn't even get a 30 % August opener because we slammed over our entire quota in July. Were not doing what's best for our fleet. Our organization...

Re: Alaska winter Chinook changes

Hey, I'm ok with whatever we decide as a fleet. I just would like to see a recent visiting of the planning, with honest, equal representation of everybody, winter, summer, large, and small. We have to be fair in recognizing that there are inequalities in both the winter, AND summer fisheries. And mo...

Re: Alaska winter Chinook changes

Yes,, The task force was held 25 years ago, was it ever the intent that we should permanently set in stone guidelines which future generations would adhere to forever? Things change. Bristol Bay wasn't dumping 30 million RSW sockeye into the summer markets to name just one. It's time for a new task ...

Alaska winter Chinook changes

For those of you with an Alaskan troll permit, you will soon be getting a newsletter from ATA. In it, is a questionnaire asking if you feel that more Chinook quota should be moved from the summer fishery to the winter fishery, and if so, what amount? 5, 10, or 15,000 fish. The current winter GHL is ...

Re: 2 simple issues - not so simple!

Good point brought up about lead quality. I borrowed some molds and melted down some factory 25 and 30 lb. Balls this spring to make bigger. There was a lot of non lead crap that floated to the surface, which I skimmed off. If this is going to be an on going concern, we may all have to think about m...

Re: 2 simple issues - not so simple!

First, the mains are going to be the first to encounter the fish. Being new to power trolling myself, I've asked around, and it seems fairly common that the mains will easily outfish the bags. Having hand trolled for 20 years before the move, I can tell you that for whatever reason, it is quite comm...

Re: Summer King Quota already announced!?!

Actually, we went over by something like 100k last year, which when all was settled and done, put us a lot closer to where we should have been, but still shy. This year's quota though quite a bit bigger on the face, only actually gives about 14k more than what we wound up putting in last year. With p...

Helm chair

Hello all, been off for a while. I'm back! I've bought a larger boat and power troll permit, and sold my hand troll, and Mai Tai. Little by little, I'm getting the boat dialed in to suit me. The helm chair she came with is need of replacement. What I'd really like to do is hold out until my butt can...

Re: River Origins of Big Kings?

I have an opinion on this. It will be one of two things, or both that is responsible for king salmon size decline. First, is your dad tall? Cause it has most everything to do with whether or not you will be. Genetics plays a big role in size. Eating good has a significant role, but genetics is at le...

478 is the 800 prefix for Alaska. I called once to test, I know it works here, I dont know about elsewhere. If not, I imagine each region has it's own number.

Re: $10.00 insurance, and other useful tips

Fellow fishermen; It's a new era, please save this number in your cell phone. 1-800-478-5555. This is the Alaska emergency number to the U.S. Coast Guard. Calling it is the equivalent of putting out a mayday on channel 16. There's a number of reasons why channel 16 might not be an option for you, an...

Hotspots. And no, I use the same flasher over after a big fish. I always take it down a few feet and watch to make sure its rolling, but I've been known to drag them till the sticker peels. I'll say this, where I am, up in the rock piles near or on bottom, they don't usually have a long life anyway....

Re: Mono Line

There's a lot opinions on which line, color, or strength. Truth is, all 3 of those can change pretty regular based on conditions. Whatever you do, shop around. I've been getting line from Ebay for cheaper than anywhere else. Good to support the local stores, for lures and things, but hooks and line ...
