How is a Deere 6076 as a troller engine?

Any input on how the John Deere 6076 works out as a troller engine would be appreciated. I know the 6068's are great engines for trolling but I don't know much about how the 6076 is for trolling.

Mating a Deere 6068 with a TD 509 deep case

Has anyone had any experience mating a Deere 6068 with a #2 SAE housing to a Twin Disc 509 deep case with a #1 SAE housing. There is a company that makes an adapter but I have not talked to anyone that has actually used one. Deere does not make a #1 housing for the 6068. Twin Disc did make a 509 dee...

Re: Fish in the schools in Sitka

Salty, As you may know, I spend the off season as a middle school science teacher here in WA. For nearly 20 years I have participated in the Salmon in The Classroom program where we hatch and raise salmon, well.... in the classroom, as well teaching an entire unit on salmon. We also visit natural sp...

Re: Submarine

Back in the 80's I found a bronze marker attached to a boulder on the beach at Hidden Falls that was marked "U.S.N. Submarine Base Bangor,WA Torpedo Station". This was just a day prior to the first seine opener of the year for chums. I just had to chuckle at the comic vision if a sub were ...

Re: Let's Build Some Boats!

I have had the same conversation with builders for a complete boat. Do I have 500K to invest in a new boat? Yea, I wish! But it's the same conversation I had with them about replacing bulkheads and putting in slush tanks. They would do it for 60k, I did it myself for 10k and I do know a little about...

Re: Let's Build Some Boats!

Salty, The going rate for mat, resin, and roving is about $2.00/lb. A hull shell will take about 10-12 barrels of resin @500lbs each and about an equal weight of glass, plus gelcoat, hardener, etc. OK, 25k for materials for just a hull and another 10k labor if I do a lot of the work. 35K is a safe n...

Re: Let's Build Some Boats!

Some thoughts on the last few posts. Steel boats fish great, are really tough, and easy to modify and repair. However, there more than a few steel boats around that are on their third bottoms. New steel coating systems are better these days but that's what they said too, 10,20,30, and 40 years ago. ...

Let's Build Some Boats!

OK, I'm one step closer to building a new "kit" boat and have some info to share. There seem to be four viable options out there that may meet my needs. First is the 47' Sunnfjord hull. The mold need to be transported but it seems to be in fair shape and would be ready to use with a little...

Re: Which Is The Best 42'+ F/G Troller Hull/Mold?

The Marshall D.Cole hull! The Charity is a Cole boat, I forgot about those. Last I heard the mold was in Rosedale, I talked to the nephew a few years back but I don't have his number anymore. He said he could show me the molds but at the time I was not in the market. I think is close to 50' if I'm n...

Re: Which Is The Best 42'+ F/G Troller Hull/Mold?

Carol W, Yes, I am considering it. I have talked to Todd at Sunnfjord and Howard at Little Hoquiam. I'm waiting for some final numbers from them. I'm sure that if they had a deal for more than one hull the price would be cheaper. I hope to sit down with Todd next week, so if you (or anyone) is inter...

Re: Which Is The Best 42'+ F/G Troller Hull/Mold?

I did not know the Skookum 53 was still around. I looked at a couple those boats last summer and they are cool and very economical from what I hear. I talked to a guy that had an unfinished 47ft Skookum tuna troller for sale last summer but it was not what I was looking for. If I was a tuna guy that...

Re: Which Is The Best 42'+ F/G Troller Hull/Mold?

Actionalaska, I could lay up a hull on 44' C.M."Football" mold. The hull mold, house mold, rolling chocks, stack, etc. are all there. The mold needs some refinishing to get back up to snuff but it does exist! As for the Sunnfjord mold, I looked at that too. I think here are some significan...

Re: Which Is The Best 42'+ F/G Troller Hull/Mold?

I had no idea that the right hull could make me a "successful" fisherman. I just knew it, not only am I always dragging the wrong spoon, plug, or hootchie, but I guess I'm using the wrong boat too! Man, I never thought of using that one as an excuse! I wonder if my wife would buy that one ...

Which Is The Best 42'+ F/G Troller Hull/Mold?

I know this a bit of a Chevy vs. Ford question but I'm thinking about building a "kit boat" over the next couple of years and would like some opinions on the hull molds that are still out there. So far I'm considering the 44ft C.M."Football" hull, 47' full disp. Sunnfjord, 46' fu...

Re: resistant sea lice video

Time to hit youtube for "sea lice" if you all have not already done so! There is enough there to make you more than a little nervous about what is going on with the lice problem. Not to mention how B.C. fish farm are trying to cast a negative shadow on our hatchery program.

Re: Show me your hayrack Salty!

Salty, Pretty cool, Karl does some nice work!!! I really like the way you have mounted the gurdies sideways and up high out of the way of landing fish yet positioned so you don't have to shift your balance or footing. I have a full shelter deck that extends all the way to the cabin but what I really...

Show me your hayrack Salty!

Salty, I'd really like to see what you came up with for you new and improved hayrack and troll pit design. I'm in the process of trying to improve the ergos on mine and am thinking of moving the gurdies from the bulwarks to the center of the deck on a hayrack type system. One big fat coho and four b...
