Re: Oregon Salmon Meeting in Newport

FYI...not much effort or catch over the winter. The Area G troll annual winter fishing period is from October 1 until March 15. Area G troll has been open in Areas 123 to 127 and portions of Areas 23 to 27 daily since October 3, 2014. Catch and effort has been low. The current catch estimate from Oc...

Re: Renaming a Boat

I am a little biased since I fished on the Nord Fjord (don't forget the "j") back in the 70's and 80's in BC. It was then on its' second owner, a Norwegian, who bought if from, surprisingly, it's Norwegian first owner......Elling Reite. Elling was one heck of a fisherman....I still remembe...

Re: Handtrollers snagging at Bear cove?

Barbless hooks? Not a problem....we have used them in BC since....I can't even remember when this reg came in. However, surprisingly I don't believe you will notice a difference in your catch rate.....and the ones that do go back, either voluntarily because they are too small, or involuntarily becau...

Re: Frozen Dog Salmon

Briefly looked through it and it is a nice summation. It looks like a very organanized fishery. One thing I noticed is the estimation process as to how many fish have been caught during the season. One thing DFO (Department of Fisheries and Oceans) has implemented here...is daily reporting....at lea...

Re: Frozen Dog Salmon

A couple of questions...then a couple of comments? How many licenses (permits) are there in Alaska? Does the permit give you the opportunity to fish the entire area that is open for trolling? Is an IFQ being considered? Clinkerboy talked about the number of licenses doubling for the area he fishes (...

Re: Frozen Dog Salmon

I might also add that the BC coast is divided into 3 license areas for trollers....Inside Vancouver Island, West coast of Vancouver and North (of Cape Caution). You must have a license to fish each area....and licenses are around $100 000. Most boats have one license, although there actually are qui...

Re: Frozen Dog Salmon

"Abundance", just so you know...we do not fish 8 lines in Canada....haven't been able to do that for 30 years (though before that it was unlimited and I did know of a few guys who fished 11 lines (bow line, main line, 3 sets of "pigs" and one off the mast) ....you have to be pret...

Re: Ocean Rover

Well, sorry to hear this.....like I said, it was a well kept, fishy vessel...but wood boats do not take long to deteriorate if they are not looked after. This may not be a good time to purchase a vessel....might have to wait for the offseason.

Re: Ocean Rover

That boat was owned by Butch Neave of Nanaimo, one of the highliners on the coast during the 60's, 70's and 80's. I believe it was built as a halibut boat but Butch bought it to replace his 42', Storm Prince. He caught a lot of fish with that boat and it always looked good as he did a good job of ke...

You know you’re a lowliner when:

A group of highliners runs towards you when you are fishing by yourself, sees you flip a nice one aboard, reads the name on your boat…and keeps going!!

Re: Individual Fisherman Identification

My Dad, who left this earth many years ago to seek out other fishing spots, came over to Canada from Norway in the late 20's and trolled, longlined, seined and did some mid-water trawling. His brother, obviously my uncle, followed him over a little while later and mostly halibut fished in the Bering...
