Re: Stainless fasteners below waterline.

What boldventure said. Dont worry about it. Pulled several ss fasteners out in my boat that were put in c. 1986. Looked brand new. I refastened two years ago with stainless on advice from a very well known shipwright. He said no worries, that is all he uses. The dipped galvanized crap from china the...

Re: alternative float switch

Have been through 1 blue and white Rule with the protective box around it, and 1 Rule Super switch in the last year, that is when I tried the waterwitch. Guys at the marine supply said that something seems to have changed with the Rules, I know they are mercury free now, maybe that is the problem. T...

Re: alternative float switch

May want to reconsider on the water witch. I installed one on the recommendation of a marine surveyor. Big mistake! Nothing but problems with it. Had one in the shaft alley in the fish hold. These things don't like fish slime. Woke up 3 different times 80 miles offshore on the tuna grounds to the hi...

Re: Gurdy Identification

I have non conductive plastic spools and parts for those types of gurdies. As far as I know Turnbull spools were always brass. Those valves are very good. They are much better than the aluminum block PTP valves that were commonly used on those types of gurdies. There were lots of home made and knock...

Re: Sacramento Returns

I got some some #'s e-mailed to me by a connection several weeks ago that showed some horrendous returns on a few of the key tributaries. From what I saw I can guarantee there probably won't be a SOF season. One of the key hatcheries did not even get enough fish to meet their egg requirement. Not go...

Re: Outboard motor vs. inboard hydralics

Next time I am at the boat I will get some up close pics of the setup. I think that would really show how simple and reliable the system is. As for people who know how these work and can make parts, Warren Junes as mentioned earlier helped with my partner boats system last year. Most of the other gu...

Re: Columbia to have largest spring Chinook run in 71 years???

Us trollers in northern Oregon really don't get to catch these. Our north of Cape Falcon season doesn't usually start until May 1st, and at that the weather really is marginal that time of year here so fishing time can be extremely limited. My catch in May usually is a mixed bag of summer and fall r...

Re: Outboard motor vs. inboard hydralics

Now that I have time I will give some more input on this outboard mount hydraulic question. Actionalaska brought up some good points on the installation needing to be precise. That is critical. I have a guy here in Oregon who did the last one of these for my friend and he kept the blueprints. If eno...

Re: Outboard motor vs. inboard hydralics

Like someone else mentioned I posted on this awhile back in "Outboard Powered Hydraulics" on how to set up a reliable system. To clarify a little better after re-reading my post- The pump used is the VTM42 Vickers pump. It is actually a power steering pump I think for a tractor but works g...

Re: Outboard Powered Hydraulics

Are you going to be using this in a small boat for power trolling? We have been running outboard powered gurdies since the late 60's down here in Oregon in our commercial dory boats. I have this setup on my own boat and it is 1000% better than using a small Honda auxilary, i.e. no noise and vibratio...

Re: NEW MEMBER

Capt. Midnite, You are not alone in your sadness to what has happened to us here on the West coast. I grew up trolling in Oregon, and bought my own boat when I was old enough. Have seen many good times but more bad. I really feel for the guys down there. I have lost a lot of money not being ably to ...

Spread lengths

As I sit here getting ready to tie gear for our May start date in Oregon thought I would run this by some of you. I am considering tying up my gear shorter this year. In the past 9 years of running my own boat (been trolling 20) I have experimented with many different length spreads, depending on ge...

Re: One Particular Wave

Sad to hear about Robert. Only met him a couple times but I sure got a million laughs from his talk on the radio over the years. What a character, he will be missed. This has been a tough winter on our fleet with the passing of George Shaw and Jim Spooner who frequented Garibaldi for many years.

Re: 1st Lower 48 Salmon opener

From all indications this second opener was also a bust. Our dory fleet tried it off Cannon Beach and Seaside-nothing. With the price of fuel I think I am going to bag it until I hear of a real solid report. Sounds like the crabpot situation north of the river will make this area unfishable, not lik...
