Re: Smear Campaign against fishing
Oh, I should have mentioned that the title on the front page of the BBC website that leads you to the article is "How to Spot Secret Crime on the Oceans". Then when you click on it, you get led to a map showing the paths of fishing vessels created over a very long period. So they are plant...

Smear Campaign against fishing
Here is a link to an article put out by the BBC. An environmentalist group called Oceana has used data taken from the AIS collision avoidance electronic vessel monitoring system to create a "Global Fishing Watch" map. http://www.bbc.com/future/story/20180607-how-to-spot-the-secretive-activ...

Re: King Salmon July Opening
I don't have the links handy, but the Summer King opening is scheduled for July 1. They talked about postponing it til the 15th or something, but ruled that out. I don't think they have posted what the quota will be yet. That is the short answer with with the info I believe is correct. Maybe somebod...

I believe anyone can buy a fish from a commercial fishermen. I don't know how many you are talking about, but the custom processor that fits your needs is going to be the hard thing to find.

Re: Newbie with lots of questions
I think you're going to have to be more specific to coax answers out of people. Make it easier for the people you are hoping will help you learn. For example, what state or nation are you planning on fishing out of? As far as money - not much profit, I'm sorry to say. People's desire to live the dre...

...for an ad marketing wild caught salmon. This would be an ad where a brown bear would come across a farm raised salmon that fell off a truck or something. He would sniff it, realize it wasn't right, turn his nose up at it and walk off. Presumably then finding a wild caught salmon to feast on. You ...

Re: Favorite engine controls?
Many boat owners look down their nose at Hynautics systems. What they forget is that the system worked good for 30 years before it started causing problems. What else has that kind of reliability? Microcommander is supposedly where the smart money is nowadays. But if I remember right, cost for the p...

Re: Welded rings on spoons
I think they are welded on with an oxy/acetylene torch. Or actually, you could probably use a mapp gas torch and the copper brazing rod that I found to make repairs on the brass rods on my floats. If you put it in a vice just so, the jaws of the vice could protect the spoon from the heat. Or you may...

Re: sea sick
I read once in a post by a coast guard man that said given a small enough boat, and rough enough seas, virtually everyone will get puking sick. Imagine being inside a life raft with a canopy at night in 20 foot seas. You're not going to puke? I tend to believe there is a wide range of tolerance to s...

Re: sea sick
I wanted to post a link to the best sea-sickness article I have ever read, but it escapes me. So I will try and remember as many points as I can. Some members of my family suffer mightily from it. There are medicines that help, and there are non-medicinal steps to be taken as well. As far as medicin...

Re: Magic formula?
At the dock, with one cannonball down a couple fathoms, I have plus 600 milivolts on the wire just above water level, with the negative lead of the voltmeter on the rudder post. And it looks like those zincs weigh more like 10 pounds when new, not 5. I wonder why aluminum anodes aren't more availabl...

Re: Magic formula?
I am willing to give my 2 cents, and I am also willing to be corrected by others. My fiberglass boat came from Canada with a lot more zincs than you normally see on Alaskan boats. The Canadian fishermen told me this boat had a good reputation for being fishy. So I stuck with the program that was in ...

Yes, we've been through this before. Al seems like a sincere guy, but we disagree on some fundamental concepts. And that makes continuing discussion exhausting and frustrating.

I'm a dope. Up above I have an inaccuracy. 700 milivolts actually equals 0.7 volts.
Nothing like a little disinformation to help with the brain snakes. And that always seems to happen on the topic of black boxes.

Re: Oregon Vs California, input please
I think the reason gurdies exist is because you can't run a heavy enough cannonball on a downrigger for multiple spreads. If the stainless wire isn't running down close to vertical, you have no idea what your depth is. And if you want to run full size flashers, the drag is even greater. On top of th...

Re: Black Box
Pacific Net and Twine website doesn't give us much to go on, does it? No picture, model number, whatever. I bet they are the same as what Salty and I have on our boats. There's not that much to them. Since it says "Russell Black Box", I would say you are on the right track.

Re: Black Box
Yes. I had to solder a wire on to make my voltmeter lead (wire) longer so it would reach. I also solder alligator clips on ends. One gets clipped on your wire with cannonball lowered over the side as deep as practical in the harbor. The other end gets attached to the rudder post, which is considered...

Re: Black Box
Well holy hubs of Hannah. The most dangerous topic on the forum. I dunno, we covered that pretty thoroughly a couple times. Probably the threads got so long that it's hard to find the gist. I forget what the consensus was. The wire in the water should be between 0.67 and 0.72 volts positive with res...
