Harder than it looks
Just getting started in this business (and into fishing in general). Its tougher than it looks. I have been out 5 times (by the Soquel hole in Monterey, CA), and have caught 6 small ones (total) that I had to return. In this last trip I caught one 27 1/8 salmon and I was so happy! my first landing I...

Re: GPS signals at risk
That is why I think mothballing and cancelling the LORAN stations in 2010 was so unwise. what? To save 167 million a year? that less than peanuts, that like a single grain of salt compared to the feast of debt the country is mired in. On top of that it damages our national security to depend on sate...

Re: Permit Prices
Here in the San Francisco Bay the prices I have seen in www.craigslist.org for a salmon permit are:
- $3000 for up to 45 ft = $67/ft
- $700 for up to 23 ft = $30/ft
- 31 ft boat for $1000, including salmon permit = $32/ft (assuming free boat, which I bought)
- $1500 for a 32 ft boat = $47/ft
- $3000 for up to 45 ft = $67/ft
- $700 for up to 23 ft = $30/ft
- 31 ft boat for $1000, including salmon permit = $32/ft (assuming free boat, which I bought)
- $1500 for a 32 ft boat = $47/ft

Re: IRS's Capital Construction Fund
Do any of you use the capital construction fund for commercial fishermen in your taxes (IRS publication 595)? Is it worth it? - From what I read, it is used to defer or save for the cost of a boat or a rebuild. But given that the cost of limited entry fishing permits (salmon, crab, etc) easily excee...

No salmon season in CA this year?
I read today in the SF Chronicle that we had the lowest salmon returns in years.. only like 69,000 (less than last year's returns), when they want a minimum of 180,000 to be sustainable. So one official mentioned that a closed season was almost guaranteed (I'm paraphrasing from memory). Do any of yo...

I'm new at this, do the issues you discuss here end up having some influence into California's regulations or legislation?

commercial boat liability insurance?
Where do you all get your boats insured? Every company I have tried (Progressive, BoatUs, etc) plainly states that no insurance will be provided for commercial boats, even if it is liability only. I have a 1940's 32 ft wooden salmon troller (not that it matters.. its is rejected just because its a c...

Do I need a USCG captain's license to fish?
What is it good for/required for? I am brand new to fishing in general. I bought a 32ft wood troller that I plan on trolling for salmon when the season opens next year or the one after. I would fish in CA in front of SF Bay. I am in the process of getting a salmon permit transfer, but just in case i...

Re: A little rot on the pilothouse?
I am in the same boat as the original poster. Rot in the pilot house. (plus very unfortunately rot on the top of the deck pin frames) I read that one of the things that kills rot is antifreeze (more accurately, the glycol in the antifreeze). But I also read that it is toxic and sweet tasting. has an...
