Re: Yakutat far north grounds
JKD, I should clarify that I was up as a deckhand last year, though I have fished my own rig in years past and did not cheat the fleet

Yakutat far north grounds
Finally I got the opportunity to visit Yakutat and I was not disappointed, nicest people with great attitude- even the young ones seemed to love their town. Would be a great place to live if the grounds were closer, we were trolling 100 miles west of there...in sight of Area E and Kayak island. Iced...

The seasons are posted on the pfmc website but I find its not an easy site to navigate. You'll be looking for "north of Cape falcon"

Re: Alaska winter Chinook changes
I love the idea of a huge winter quota, a lot of value added, and opens up the possibilities of bailing on coho and running south for another long king season in the summer. Makes all the sense in the world. Of course southern boats might see opportunity up here and snap up those unused permits

Re: Helm chair
my boat came with a truckers seat and I have to say that it is big and comfy, I have found 2 deckhands dozing ...and I'll never forget the skipper from Thorne Bay telling me he came close to running onto rocks because he fell asleep, he tossed out the seat....standing only

It's probably more of a threat to existing farm salmon operations than high end west coast trollers. Seems like they're geared up to producing 100 tons a year in Panama, so they've a ways to go before putting a dent in the 230,000 tons annual of farmed Atlantics

Re: River Origins of Big Kings?
Makes me think of the crab fishery, where few survive the harvest to grow to hog-size. We now have 'reserves ' set up so rockfish can grow old and be spawners and help the populations....maybe we're too efficient and take out those 4 year fish (hogs) when they're feeder 2 year olds

I bought a system on Ebay which works fine at a quarter the price. So I'll either keep the comnav as backup or put it up for sale .

Re: comnav
I have the "commander" model. The display goes blank and alarm sounds from the computer. Local electronics dealer thinks it may be a processor malfunction and sent it away. Another bummer is that I just spent $850 on a remote . The clock still ticking.. now 5 weeks since he took it. That c...

Our local dealer has everyone using them and they don't come cheap. Mine failed on the grounds and was sent back to Canada 4 1/2 weeks ago. No word from anyone. Pretty poor service I'm thinking,
