Re: 2 speed Kohlstrand hand crankers
Agreed, back when I was hand cranking the 2 speeds were awesome. I never put it on the low gear though, way to slow as mentioned before.

Kelkote
Curious if anyone is putting Kelkote on the decks of their wood boats? I currently have tuffflex, but it sounds like Pacific Pride in Ktown isn't carrying it anymore. They mentioned Kelkote as an alternative but were unsure about wood boats. I'd like to redo some of my tuffflex this spring. Thanks!

Re: Black Box
One day last year in the second king opening I had 11 kings on the starboard side, and 1 king on the port side. I was scratching my head and my crewman was giving me crap as all the kings were on his side. But, the coho catch rate was the same for both sides. Being a beginner, I didn't immediately s...

Spoons
I've got tons of spoons. Superiors sizes 5-8, Clendons, Katchmor, Canadians, etc brass, good, chrome, and tons of variety. Inherited them with the boat I bought. Anybody want to share any good spoon fishing strategies? Do you run spoon/flasher alternating up the lines ever? Trying to make use of the...

Shear boards
Question for the forum if anybody is still watching it.
Anybody use shear boards when just running davits to increase your spreads? I've never used them, but have seen a few sets. Would your rig them down by the leads?

Re: Alaska winter Chinook changes
I got into this industry knowing exactly how it worked and I hope things don't change away from the derby style openers we have. The only thing I'd like to see looked it is a mechanism to slow down the catch rate (not cut it off) to keep us fishing in March/April. Perhaps going to 3 or 4 days a week...

Re: Hand Troll or Power Troll?
I am optimistic on trolling. I see it as a great opportunity for locals in SE to have a way to make income. We can fish almost year round, which takes the pressure off the summer season a bit. It might not be a way to completely support a family until coho prices come back, but it beats working for ...

Enough people care about what they eat, that I don't think it will have that big of an impact IF we get mislabeling under control. Some of these fish will be passed off as wild, Alaskan fish. People want to buy wild, organic fish. People buy the mislabeled fish, eat it, and aren't impressed. We lose...

I sold at noon on opening day to Philips here in Craig, and they gave me $2.75 for large reds, and $2.25 for mediums. Buck a pound for cohos.

Re: outboard hydro-pack
Looks like a lot of work to do to a big expensive outboard. I'm sure you could kiss any type of warranty goodbye too. I wish somebody would figure out how to put hydro pump on a 8hp 4 Stroke kicker motor and then go sans the prop and use it solely to run gurdies. Water cooled with a good cowling to ...

I'd say that if you got 2 weeks of boat yard work + a crewman for 15%, you'd be coming out the winner on that one.

Re: Direct Market Filletting at sea ILLEGAL.
Is there a permit that would allow you to tie up to the dock, fillet a few salmon, and sell fillets by the pound from the dock? Locals are grumbling they can't buy fresh fish locally, but they don't want to buy the whole fish.

Re: Rules
Yeah, the rod regulation isn't new, they were just cleaning up the language on that one. I never did understand that rule. If a guy wanted to work harder with hand gurdies, or catch less fish with rods, why is that prohibited? I sure there is some rational or history behind that rule, I just can't f...

Re: Who makes or made the best sea boat under 40'
It looks to me that it'd take a fair amount of glass work to get that boat trolling again. It's been for sale for awhile now, so who knows, they might be willing to work with the price. 44' C&Ms don't come up to often, and they sure aren't building anymore of them.
