The Not So Wild Fish Conservancy

Washington hatchery brood stock are required to be captured from the same river system in which the hatchery is located. Hatchery salmon genetics match naturally spawning salmon genetics. The Not-So Wild Fish Conservancy lies. Assuming the lie that hatchery genetics differ from naturally spawned gen...

Fish Sales Worksheet

The attached Excel spreadsheet, will not reflect the conditions in each locale (was developed for ours) but may help in consideration of fish sales options. This was not developed by an Excel pro and am confident it has much room for improvement. Prices are outdated, nothing is locked in the spreads...

Courage

I'm still working up the courage to to answer if a small sailboat might make a good hand troller. But, it's hard, you know? The pressure! What will all the strong, brave, cold-resistant, ocean-going, independent, self-sufficient, storm-braving, commercial salmon trollers think? It's petrifying. Para...

Re: Alaska winter Chinook changes

Yak, Thanks for the clarification. We deal with the same sports mind-set, that because I own a sport boat and buy a $30 license, I am entitled to more fish than the general public. Also, if in your discussions and research, you itemize AK's unrestored concessions, it may be good to post the list or ...

Re: Alaska winter Chinook changes

Yak, I'm not an Alaskan (perhaps I am at heart), but couldn't let the swipe at southerners pass without a little friendly kickback. I did a brief fact check on, "One hundred percent of the hatchery fish from down South, which is mostly what we catch, is paid for, 100% of it,,with U.S. tax dolla...

Re: Opinions On SAW Trolling Wire

Once and future,

My apologies, we were out fishing. I was raised on the wire with brass markers so that's what I purchased. I'm a simple man. Echo JKD's comments on Stan's service and they take credit cards now.

Respectfully,

Lane

Re: Opinions On SAW Trolling Wire

Brother Dave, 1/19 - 1/16th inch purchased in 2015 gave us one splice all summer. Checking the wire yesterday, revealed one strand broken. Spliced that as well for a total of 2 for over a year. Turning was improved, no twisting, saved a lot of hassle running floats. Worth every penny so far. Respect...

Kelper,

Thanks for posting the picture. That looks similar to what I remember for angle. Nice looking boat and should be even more enjoyable with the power permit.

All the best for your season,

Re: Cheaper gurdy parts?

Drew,

Tacoma Screw is a top source for fasteners near Seattle. If they don't have them, they may point you in the right direction.

Re: Stick angle

I am curious too. I saw an albacore troller with them almost parallel with the water, but there wasn't much weight hanging.

Thanks for taking the time to be so thorough in your explanation. It's extremely helpful and I'm forwarding a link to this to a friend struggling with the issue.

SteelheadStalker, Paste the links below into your browser to download three sets of photos of a small boat. Once you have downloaded the zip files you will have to extract the pics to a local folder. The downloads are up to 110 MB so be patient, but you should be able to zoom in on areas you need to...

Scottmt, That's a great report and much appreciated. An accurate account of real experience helps to ground newcomer's expectations to something reasonable. I wish there would have been more of these posted before I set out. Enjoy that work on the boat this winter and best wishes for next season. Lane

Re: Bad day

I like it. There would probably be extremes, but perhaps some meaningful dialog. Sporties usually look up to and somewhat follow guides. If charter operators and trollers generally followed co-developed guidelines, it would probably have some effect on the "snow-birds," particularly if it ...

Re: Bad day

Thanks Drew, I didn't spend much text conveying that I agree. From a trollers perspective it is truly hideous to have a fleet park in the middle of a drag and I don't think it is safe. I am well aware of what a headache it causes trollers not knowing if a vessel is moving. It's annoying to change co...

Re: Bad day

Thanks Drew, Absolutely agreed that safety is first and that you should assume folks don't see you and I'm also glad you bring up respect. I''d like to add that the captain of the 30k+ pound vessel underway has quite a bit of responsibility for the safety of those six passengers. If they feel their ...

Re: Bad day

Lone Eagle, thanks for posting the pic and thanks for posting that story Salty. It's good to see that something like that doesn't have to end poorly based on the character of those involved. That sure beats the story of the troller who hit the throttle when he got tangled with another boat in a tigh...
