Re: tiny VHF vs. personal epirb

https://autotether.com/cart/00_cartpage.php I like the idea of the wireless kill switch. I don't fish in rough weather, and I believe I could get back to the boat with this device (in most situations). They make two sensors- one for the skipper that shuts down the engine and sounds an alarm, and on...

Re: Looking for Advice on Twisting Float line

I did last spring Kelper, but only because I had a hard time giving up some of my 14ftm hand troll drags. Not sure if it was actually more productive though.

Re: New power troller looking for advice

AMSEA had some brochures for a wireless kill switch. If the device becomes submerged, or if the remote gets a certain distance from the boat, the engine dies and an alarm sounds. The pamphlet also said you could strap one on to your kids to keep track of them at the beach. :) I don't remember the co...

You might be more popular, yak, if you tape a woman to every gurdie in the harbor. Well, popular with the men at least.

Re: Looking for Advice on Twisting Float line

Good picture, fvsedna. No such thing as too much information. I've been told it's also important to feed new wire onto the gurdies the same way it comes off the spool. I'd be interested to see a picture too, paul. If not, about how big of a piece do you use? I'm not sure if that alone would fix my p...

Re: New power troller looking for advice

-I am torn on whether to hire a deckhand for my first season since I will be figuring out a lot of things for the first time and I'm not sure a job on my boat will be worthwhile moneywise. I thought about offering a deal where the deckhand would get a flat amount guaranteed or 12% of gross, whichev...

Looking for Advice on Twisting Float line

I have a problem with my port float line. It seems that the lead is spinning and twisting my line so that it kinks up when I make a turn into it. Last season I tried changing out the swivels, then the lead, but the only thing that seemed to help was keeping the line sucked in towards the boat instea...

Re: state loan refinance

As of Jan 1st, the interest rate for commercial fishing loans is 5.25% http://www.dced.state.ak.us/ded/fin/interest_rates.cfml The state also has a pay-on-time program where they will drop your interest rate by 1% after the first year. My payments dropped by about $500 when my loans went from 5.5 to...

Re: Attempting to salvage promotion discussion

I see three parts to promoting our salmon. 1. Get them to buy it. Lots of thoughts already posted on how to do this. 2. Educate all fishermen on the importance of proper handling. One idea- what if we could get some of the plants to give some sort of public recognition/ small prize for exceptional f...

Re: So, this is odd

If you fish beyond the 3mile limit you have to "demonstrate" that you are in compliance for the waters you are in. The inspection sticker is "demonstration" and is now mandatory (Oct 16 2012)in those waters. Inspections were mandatory for a short time. They are currently recomme...

Re: The lessons I learned

Most things are learned quickly, but it's helpful to have a few skills before you crew on a boat. How about practicing some knots, like a bowline and a clove hitch? Can you sharpen a knife? How about cooking?

Can anyone else think of some lessons that are handy to know before you get to the boat?

Re: Tuff Flex

It takes a while to set, so if you put it on a sloped surface and don't want it to run you may need to block the down-hill side. Also, the rubber chunks are nice, but not necessary.

Re: Hidden Falls Chum Tax

Here is Steve's reply: Laura, Thanks for inquiring about the tax issue. First the NSRAA board of director did not intend for the tax to apply to troll chum. We thought we had the issue covered at the board of fish in February. However, when NSRAA met with ADF&G a week ago they told us the law co...

Hidden Falls Chum Tax

I was recently informed by a tender that NSRAA will be implementing a new tax on fishermen this season. If a person catches any part of their load of chums below Peril Strait or above somewhere down by Warm Springs they will be taxed 20% on the entire load. Apparently, NSRAA plans to tax Sitka Sound...
