Re: Opinions On SAW Trolling Wire
Another SAW wire update: I am still using the 1X19 strand 5/64" wire I purchased in April of 2017. I put the same diameter wire on all 4 spools and got 2 seasons out of it with only one kink (that I didn't have to cut-out or repair because none of the strands in the kink ever broke). Near the e...

Re: Best source for Coyote spoons?
Have you checked with Englund Marine? They should be a good source that is in your general neighborhood, otherwise contact Silver Horde in Edmonds, WA at 425-778-2640. I seem to recall that Silver Horde is one of the main distributors of Coyote spoons on the West Coast.

Re: Ingvald Ask, F/V Agile has died
Hi Einar - I'm sorry to hear this news about your Dad. What a life he led. I enjoyed working with him when I joined the group he coded with in his last few years of trolling. It was quite a cast of "characters": Gordie Issacsson on the Castaway, Stan Reddekopp on the Carol Ann, Glen Mielke...

Re: sea sick
I have tried nearly all of the products suggested above with varying degrees of success. I had very good results recently after recommending "Bonine" to deckhands. I keep Bonine, Dramamine, and Merazine on the boat. Bonine seems to work best by taking the first dose the night before depart...

I found your fishing timeline interesting. The rest of the troll fleet had to wait for the 1st of July to begin fishing.

Re: Opinions On SAW Trolling Wire
Brother Dave - No, I'm going to try the 1X19 in 5/64" diameter all the way around. I have a preference for 5/64" wire - I have used it for years. When I ordered my current float-bag wire from Stan, all that was available in the 1X19 was 1/16". When I noticed that he is now offering 1X...

Re: Opinions On SAW Trolling Wire
Jamill45 - Once I finish the winter King fishery in April, I'll be ordering enough 5/64" 1X19 wire from Stan for all 6 spools on my Easthopes. I'm still impressed with the quality of the SAW 1/16" 1X19 wire I've been using on my float bags. In the 2+ seasons I've been using my SAW Wire, I'...

Re: Kelkote
We bought some Kelkote from "Wells Fishing" back in the 90s in Sitka and applied it on low traffic areas on a steel deck and it didn't seem up to the task. I could have been expecting too much, or I may have made an improper application but in less than a year it came off the recommended p...

Re: Leader Material
GaribaldiFisher - I don't know which area you are planning to fish, but given the smaller size of the Kings we have been targeting here in SE, I'm using smaller mono now than was the case back in the 90s. Once in awhile we see 30+ Kings but the majority of the Kings I have been collecting are betwee...

Graybeard - I think I may have a sister-hull to this vessel. It looks like it's fiberglass. I would be curious to know what is the length and where it was built?

I used your system for Coho last summer - the only real difference being I used a large SS shrimp pot snap instead of the West Marine style snap in your pictures.

Re: Tagline Breakaway Strength
Everyone has their own ideas about this topic. I know that guys use the blue tuna cord (or similar), but I have found that sunlight seems to weaken that particular material. I rarely fish up in the rockpiles so I can get away with using doubled up Oregon leader. I think you are in the ballpark using...

Re: How to keep spoons nice?
Flyer - I make my own aluminum jump rings out of soft aluminum wire - they make a difference in keeping my spoons bright. I usually make 2 passes through the hook ring and the hook's eye and then a simple twist with a pair of needle-nosed pliers to crimp the ends of the wire together.

Re: Leader Material
I like to experiment with different brands - right now I'm running Jinkai for main section of leader (line snap to spoon or flasher); Maxxima Ultragreen or PN&T Superstar for tail leader (between flasher and hook).

I was fortunate to have had a good "natural" positive line voltage reading that was relatively fishy on my last troller, a steel Ft Bragg boat. But I appreciated being able to turn on the BB and be able to boost to a higher range for enticing deep Chum. The ability to easily verify/check m...

Did you try contacting the Sitka Harbormaster office? I could be wrong but they should be able to provide you with a contact number for the responsible party for the boat in their files.

Not only do they rust - they rust quickly. If you use them with hoochies they will stain them overnight.

chumbag - I was tied in a seasonal stall on Dock 4 in Sitka's Eliason Harbor during the summer and the troller "Linda Ray" is still tied there (I passed it many times going in and out of my spot). I only saw George once walking past on the dock, but I assume that he is still around in the ...

Re: Opinions On SAW Trolling Wire
I've gotten a season and 2/3 in on the 1/16" diameter 1X19 strand SAW wire on my floats. I have gotten some broken strands that have shown-up in the 1.5 fathom space in-between the brass line markers. My wire has the crimped beads not the line marks like shown in Brother Dave's photo. I found t...

Re: squid in SE
We always found a few in our fish in the past, but were finding a significant number of squid in Kings last July on the outside of Baranof. It was enough to cause me to try to "match the hatch" and change a lot of my hoochies over to all-white, or light brown and white. It seemed to make a...
