Re: New power troller looking for advice
I used Nobelteck for a couple years, It was an old edition, real old, charts outdated. Replaced laptop and under advice from tender skipper went to Costal Exployer, the price is cheap, free updates for a year, comes with all nav charts from Alaska to California. Down falls, they don't yet have inter...

Re: Deckhand pay
I also struggled with this, When icing fish I only use one deckhand can keep up with 300 fish day. I pay my experienced guy 15% off the dock price less fish tax if he quits or is let go he gets 12% for leaving me hanging. When freezing I was told not to go over 25% for crew off the top. my ace takes...

Re: Simplex gurdie question
There is a balance point of neutral on the simplex, I also had the same issue. I was instructed the arm that supports the shift lever arm will get bent when people shift either into spool-in or break position applying too much pressure, slamming into gear. I bitch at my pullers all the time. Just re...

Re: king salmon trawl bycatch info
Only being a troller for a couple years, I've been asking questions on the lack of kings returning from enhancment. This is sad letting large interest groups slaughter and waste the stocks and the efforts used in Alaska to keep wild stocks going. In any other industry there are penalties to pay if y...

Re: Cost of a Freezer
I also installed IMS extruded aluminum freezer plates as my freezer shelving, the idea is to pull more btu's directly from product contacting them. Added 4 inches of insulation to hold, and hatch $12,000.00 EQUIPMENT EXPENSE 3500# unit, water pump, plumbing, copper tubing, refrigerant, hull penetrat...

Re: Cost of a Freezer
I just installed an IMS blast freezer rated at 3500 lbs a day, decide how much product and how quickly you need it frozen. I was told you cant freeze it too fast, quicker makes ice crystals smaller and a better product. As for unit size everyone said overkill is good, the worst thing that could happ...

Re: electric girdies
Salty, you stated early in this post to test your lead voltage, how are you completing this? I use ganyon line for break away straps, do they isolate the lead from wire at all, changing the field around the ball? I have been pouring my own leads for awhile now, people stating not to use recycled wit...

Re: Chum fishing drogues
I use two drogues, one on either side. The main lines I run from my forward cleats, with breakaway straps at the drogues eye. I keep them way forward of my propeller and run a line from my midship cleat to the main line to keep the drogue from drifting under or away from the boat in turns. lastly at...

Lane, I agree with every word you wrote 1000%. Southeast is the last hold out were trollers have a chance to make a living, thanks to people like you. I am a bone head! When I posted my last I meant to say "trawlers" NOT " trollers. A couple letters can change the whole meaning. I hav...

Re: GOA bycatch news
I see corporate greed, Large trollers mostly from Seattle and Oregon coming to ALASKAN waters. Blatantly destroying our resources protected by our states fish and game. They don't spend a dime in Alaska. All the product is taken south, prossed down south, sold down south, and we are left with scorch...

Re: Is now a bad time to get into trolling?
Here is an off beat question,; I power troll and the new thing I've heard from code partners, and seen, is large overnight charters are buying up hand troll permits, hence catching all the fish their customers "sport fishermen" want. Who is regulating them? I'm sure fish and game is checki...

Re: Slushing in Totes
Slush is the shizzel, The finished product (fish) are beautiful, clean, fresh, no ice denting/bruising, the water washes out any blood residue remaining. It is half the effort, easier on you back, hands, and the fish. Everyone is correct depending on size of fish and amount of ice you start with you...
