Where did the King Salmon go?

Please go to the following link and give it some thought. The observer program was restructured and trawlers in the central and western gulf now fish with less than 30% of their trips observed. This allows them to "game" the system. Do a safe tow heading out the channel at 11pm, pick it up...

What are friends for?

Friday, October 14, 2016 NOAA Office of Law Enforcement Pre-warns Trawler Violators CYA We have always suspected a certain collusion between processors/trawlers and the NOAA Office of Law Enforcement. We know if we step over the line there is no hesitation in issuing us a Notice of Violation (NOVI)....

More bycatch dirty deeds reported at: http://tholepin.blogspot.com/ "NMFS is no friend of the fisheries resources (like the Forest Service) they are tasked with protecting, but their website is a source of shocking information regarding the Prohibited Species Catch (PSC) of Halibut." It's ...

It's now or never for getting the draggers to clean up their act. If you give a crap, get a comment, however brief, in before May 30 to:

New Halibut Bycatch postings

Check http://tholepin.blogspot.com/ He's got the site updated after being dormant for a while. Rumor on the dock of 80,000 lbs of small halibut shoveled over right out of Kodiak. The draggers are making a big push for trawl quota and no reduction in bycatch at the upcoming NPFMC meeting. Make yourse...

Re: Precautions when buying a boat

The ONLY way to buy a boat and know it has a clean title is through a US Marshal sale. Besides there being no single place to look for liens there can be un-filed liens in EVERY other case. I know it sounds crazy, because we have all bought and sold boats, but this is a fact. Sorry, I know it's not ...

Re: LED lights

I've done some LED research and not to impressed with Rigid, fancy website, info lacking, and high prices. I've not been able to find their waterproof rating or vibration certification. I ended up ordering a bunch direct from another maker with the highest waterproof, IP68, and vibration resistant r...

Gaming of trawl bycatch revealed using NMFS #'s

The site: http://tholepin.blogspot.com/ has a new posting, the Failure of the Restructured Observer Program, wherein he uses NMFS data to show how trawlers were"gaming" the observer/bycatch. The catcher/processor Golden Fleece now has to have 100% observer coverage and his bycatch now is 9...

Re: Fuel filters for John Deere 6068

The Deere dealer here in Kodiak is having folks install a water block filter after the racors and before the fuel pump. Anything similar in southeast? I think this is mainly for electronic controlled engines.

Re: video of trawler crew pewing over dead halibut at the do

Tholepin has edited the video and posted it. Still not the greatest quality but this was filmed by accident by some guys getting on the M/V Tustemena. The ferry dock in Kodiak overlooks Trident"s unloading station and these guys couldn't believe what they were seeing, nor the reaction from the ...

Re: Drinking from freshwater tank

Old timers tip from out in Sandpoint was, after draining the water tank for the winter, pour a bottle of PA vodka into the tank. Serves as antifreeze and kills any bacteria that might be present. It actually works! Takes the funny taste out of fiberglass tanks too.

Sorry about the poor quality of the video it's a screen shot of the video playing on another device. I spoke with the fellow who filmed it, he is sending a hard copy and the tholepin guy will be posting it. Should be better quality. It may show up as a youtube.

video of trawler crew pewing over dead halibut at the dock i

Think this might be happening with King Salmon? Here's what happens during the 84% of the time draggers aren't carrying observers. Just think how many halibut might still be around had we adopted a plan similar to what the Canadiens did over 16 years ago when they reduced their halibut bycatch from ...
