Re: Alaska winter Chinook changes

I don't know if some trollers are real fishermen and some aren't, but if you divide up the 109k kings that were caught by 900 permits, that's 121 kings a boat. I'd consider that a bad opener myself.

Re: Alaska winter Chinook changes

Again,,, there's some guys who made over 100 grand this last 5 days, and they're not going to appreciate me saying it, but the numbers don't lie. We need to redistributed the wealth and give everybody a better chance, in my humble opinion. The proposal to switch to 60/40 needs to be revisited too. ...

Re: The Food and Drug Administration on Thursday approved ge

You say the Obama administration stalled the approval of the GMO salmon, but it was Obama who appointed a former Monsanto VP to the head of the FDA. Both sides are only loyal to the highest bidder.

This could be a catalyst in the GMO labeling effort at the state level though.

Re: Fish Price

If you fish out of Craig you should really join the co-op. Craig fish is such a horrible buyer. Prices down south between ecp and Trident are the worst in southeast and are always the first to drop and last to bump.

It hasn't been announced yet. I heard something about the run forecasts for down south were low, which didn't match the abundance seen in the winter fishery, so it was being redone.

Re: Chain length on Stabilizers

Try switching one to a different attachment position and see if there is a difference. If that doesn't work, you might have to get out your saw and make the wood part of the stabies smaller. I had problems with this last year. I had the stabies 2 sizes smaller than the biggest (the wood ones from mu...

Re: Best bailer bag set up for a deep fish hold

I haven't done it myself, but I know that they make bags that you can synch shut once they are full. Then you just push them to the bottom and start a new bag. I've used an elevator before, it can be very slow to unload.

Re: Engine driven RSW systems

So would this kind of system be for the hold or for pre-chilling before icing? I've often thought a kind of RSW rinse bin would be a cool thing to have. I don't always do this, but I have on occasion, slushed fish before icing them. It's amazing when you go to unload and none of the ice in their bel...

Re: electric girdies

I'm probably mistaken. The fishing has been good the last 2 years, so I haven't been in the pit with a multimeter for a while. 2 years ago when there were fish at icy straight, I tried 1 side direct connect and 1 side long breaking straps. I couldn't see any difference in the amount they caught over...

In my experience it is the other way around. Longer break away will decrease voltage, shorter or even direct connect, will make the line hotter.

Cheaper gurdy parts?

I need to replace some parts and do a minor rebuild on my Kolstrand gurdies this year. Anyone have a source for parts cheaper than the factory? $16 for a screw is a bit pricey when you need 12 of them.

I don't have this setup on my boat, but you could try a webcam pointed at the radar. I don't know if you would get those lines like when you point a camera at a tv.

SilverT I think that you misunderstand me. All I'm saying is that I think it's negligent on charter captain's part to pass off the responsibility for the safety of their clients to somebody they don't know and who might even wish them ill will.

Re: Bad day

Silver T, grumpy trollers or not, a charter captain's first responsibility is ensuring the safety of their clients. Anchoring at the cape when there's 100 trollers there is irresponsible whether they do it right in front of a troller or a mile ahead. It seems like a lot of the charter captains don't...

How do the Atlantic sword fishermen find those temps at depth. A fiberglass stabie mounted on a davit that can be lowered to the desired depth. I can't find any pictures, but that is how it was described in a book I read. They use surface temp first and just drop that to fine tune where they want t...

Re: Direct Market Salmon.

Most of the time we think of ourselves as a pretty low volume fishery. But when you start to think about marketing your own fish it seems like one good coho trip is a ludicrous amount of fish.
