Re: Basis For Chinook Nonretention
There is a good article "The Director's Desk" in the ATA newsletter that discusses the issue of Chinook retention and conservation. I like the conclusion "Fish first".

Re: Basis For Chinook Nonretention
AKsighns, I just noticed your posts, I don't think they were posted in context or maybe I missed them ...strange. Not much participation on this site lately maybe everyone is out catching those winter king$.

Re: Favorite engine controls?
I have a number of friends using the Micro Commanders and they all like them. They seem reliable so far most put them in 6 or 7 years ago. I had cables in my first troller and had to replace one in about 15years. They would get a little stiff at the beginning of the season but after a couple of trip...

Re: Basis For Chinook Nonretention
Seems like there is that "caching" sound everytime science meets politics. Just speculating here but if there was a complete non retention of Kings next spring the charter fleet would have no salmon to target until the Coho show up in July. Not good for bookings, not good for hotels restau...

Re: Basis For Chinook Nonretention
i am happy and surprised as well. Happy for those that participate in the winter fishing for Kings and surprised that management would take the chance at catching SE Ak wild Kings. I get that they will monitor the results in Dec and decide if there will be a follow up season into April but if they s...

Re: Basis For Chinook Nonretention
The way things went down this summer in SE was confusing to me. When the spring runs of Chinook were noted disastrously down the trolling was limited at first and then completely shut down (for the first time since hatchery fishing began). Not only was it shut down on the path of these threatened ru...

Re: Black Box
Exactly Kelper, I have had similar experiences and it has convinced me there that there is definite effects from electrical issues on catch rate. The black box can certainly give you one more tool in tuning your boat but I don't think it will over ride bigger problems if they exist. Usually if my bo...

Re: Black Box
I have always had a black box onboard and always fished with it on. I usually put it to the voltage that seems optimum for that species of salmon and then just forget about it. Playing with the voltages has never been productive for me but having a consistent line voltage can take away one variable ...

Re: Alaska spring king fishing
Not sure why the new regime is cutting out one day of fishing in Sitka Sound area, couldn't be because too many fish are being caught there. Maybe they feel they need time to count the fish being caught or something. The fish haven't disappeared, the charter boats are catching just fine outside our ...

Re: Engine driven RSW systems
Delori3, I can sure see the advantages in Refrigerated Sea Water (RSW), in getting away from ice having always iced or slushed fish. Unless it's changed in Alaska the processors that I have dealt with only want iced or slushed fish because of their concerns with scale loss. In rolling seas even impr...

Re: Chain length on Stabilizers
Other than abrasion resistance, I always thought the chain added weight to the stable so that it would drop better in heavy seas. If you are underway it probably makes little difference but at slow speeds, turns in heavy seas or drifting it may make a difference. Seems like it would be nice to elimi...

Re: gurdie rebuild
Try Hastings Foundry in Vancouver BC, ask for Rico. They are the manufacturer and they rebuild them. Just drive up there and drop them off at the shop.I did mine that way and customs wasn't a problem because it was just a repair, pretty smooth.

Re: Leader lenght
I have been using Yama and Jinkai for 25 years and never seen a need to change. I think I like the Yama better but I get what ever is available at the time. They both fit the sleeves I use so no diff. but I think Yama ties easier if you use knots. One thing I didn't mention about length of leaders t...

Re: Leader lenght
If you are concerned with stretch, you will get more stretch with longer leaders. I fish short leaders with snubbers and heavier line. I also get hooks straightening and lose some fish that way but at least you don't lose the gear. Most importantly what YOU have confidence in is the way to go and at...

Re: Leader lenght
I have tried variable lengths of leaders and now I make my flasher leaders the same as my wire stops (1.5 fathoms) mainly because they don't tangle with other leaders as easily and don't tangle with the floats in current or fishing deep as easily. Plugs longer 7-10fthms. I like 120# test leaders bec...

Re: Aluminum Anodes
Lulu thank you for the clear explanations of electrical theory in your former posts, very helpful. I posted this link in a thread about stainless steel, but thought I would drop it in here because the Galvanic chart shows how anodic dissimilar metals are. Note there are differences in the types of a...
