Re: Spectra alternative to trolling wire
In 2012, i changed out all the guys and stays on my poles to Amsteel Blue Spectra/Dyneema. We have snooter poles on our rig and before the change, it required the hydraulic capstan to raise the poles. Now my wife can easily do it herself just hand-over-hand without the capstan. That set-up is still ...

Re: Thru Hull to pump hose rcommendations
You in Juneau? Go see Maritime Hydraulics at their warehouse across the street from Alaskan Brewing. They stock the bellows-Flex wire-reinforced hose in that size and have the nice band-clamps that use a bolt instead of the usual worm-screw hose-clamps. Their prices are good too.

Re: Transducer/ depth sounder options
Hi Robert! Upgraded from Fools Gold? What'd you get? Pictures! Seems among the trollers and longliners out of Sitka, that when guys upgrade they're going to Nobeltec CATCH Time-Zero Pro Version-3 for navigation, and adding the Sounder Pack, and then plugging in a Furuno DFF1-UHD black-box network so...

Re: Batteries & Inverters
Magnum also makes great inverter/chargers and they're built in Everett WA. We've had their Pure-Sine MS series units on our last two boats and never had any problems with them. A couple other things to consider: Certainly the best batteries to run the equipment you mention will be Deep-Cycle, but yo...

Re: Alaska Fishing Gold Rush of the 1980s
I bought her book from Craig at SPC just before Jana was going to be in Sitka for book signings. We went back out fishing and i got to read a bit of it before my 30-something crew buried himself it it and i couldn't pry him away from it. After we quit for the season I got a chance to read more and l...

Re: sounder(s)/transducer(s) suitable for Nobeltech Catch
You'll need the Sounder Plus Pack from Nobeltec to make this work, but I'd strongly suggest the Furuno network Black-Box sounder as the best interface. http://www.furunousa.com/Products/ProductDetail.aspx?product=DFF1-UHD The CHIRP technology allows enough target definition that you can tell the siz...

Re: Transducer location on a Skookum 47'
Depends on what sounder you're planning to use to send depth info to Catch. The newer Furuno DFF1-UHD "black box" network sounder uses a CHIRP sweep frequency that needs a special transducer that can handle the varying frequency pulse. Unless they've changed in the last year, the only tran...

Re: Direct Market Filletting at sea ILLEGAL.
Dale is on the right track with what she says above. I also asked Kathy and Ed at SEAFA and they additionally pointed to the USCG rules around what is defined to be 'Processing', and the Vessel Classification requirements for at-sea processors... I had to do a bunch of further digging to tease out t...

As usual it's nearly impossible t navigate the ADFG website to find the statute regulations, but they are online here: http://www.touchngo.com/lglcntr/akstats/aac/title05/chapter029/section120.htm And taken directly from the port-meeting handout: 6. Regulatory language in 5 AAC 29.120. Gear specific...

Re: Chain length on Stabilizers
Jackson, these ex-Canadian boats with snooters like ours have all those forward and aft stays for the poles. Dunno about yours, but mine were all steel cables made of what looked like telephone pole guy-wire and had shackles and turnbuckles all over the place. I hated the look of it and the whole la...

Re: Chain length on Stabilizers
I'm with KJ. Been using spectra (Am-Steel) for a couple seasons. Less drag, and no more clanking heavy chains! We haul in the stabies using the 3rd gurdie-spool so clearing kelp is easy using a sharp machete and hacking down away from the spectra and the haul-in line from the gurdie. Even crew could...

Gumpucky is right about the poor metallurgy in some stainless. The issue with nail-sickness is a bit different and the book-section here explains it better than I can... https://books.google.com/books?id=-PntzHwpwfoC&pg=PA96&lpg=PA96&dq=nail+sickness+boats&source=bl&ots=y5HkG82Sy...
