Our Tax write offs!
So, its Tax time(weird but, I really like taxes!!) I'm fairly new to the trolling game. Also fairly new to being a sole proprietor. What are the some of the things we can claim as taxable deductions?! One thing I try to mention to everyone that is a commercial fisherman(and I'm not sure if this appl...

Joeman,
there is a guy here in Ketchikan named Steve Huffine. He is the comnav dealer here. I can get you his number if you like?

Re: Black Box
I remember this topic from a while back. When I first joined this forum. Figuring out the fish was more than enough of a task for me at that time (with only a 1 king salmon score before I bought a permit and boat with cash!) I've since upgraded permit and just recently, boat. I thought you guys migh...

Re: Spread Box Design?
Not sure if this is what you're talking about but here is a neat way to store your gear on deck without having it cluttering up you work station around the pit! (Needless to say I 'grew up' on a small boat) you can make them as big or small as you want. This one the leaders are halved back on them s...

Re: Transducer/ depth sounder options
Thanks for the Info! Looking into those particulars. Good call on the Furuno black box, something I hadn't even considered. Anyone have any feedback on the CHIRP sounder tech.? I really like the sound of it! (see how I did that ;) another note, the boat I bought, the F/V Blue Sea. Canadian built, 42...

Transducer/ depth sounder options
Not sure if this is the right place for this post but I have bought a new boat (Yay!) and true to form of old boats it has an outdated electronics package! (not yay!) I am planning on hauling out in April and would like to put in a decent 1kw transducer to get a decent depth sounder going on the boa...

Re: comnav
I'm in the same boat as you eagle. I have the comnav p2 commander. Had it sent to combat for diagnostics and repairs and have been fishing without it for 4 weeks now. I leave tomorrow to head out to the coast for the summer King opening and am still without it. Going to be a long drive by hand... No...

Re: Wood stick mantaince
One recipe I've used for both poles and wood deck is: 1 part boiled linseed oil 1 part turpentine 1 part pine tar I've heard it called 'Boat Soup' Some people heat it up a little to get the pine tar a little more viscous. I used to just mix the pine tar and turpentine and then add the linseed oil af...

Re: Best bailer bag set up for a deep fish hold
When you say a 'deep' fish hold I'm thinking its the 80" part that's the depth. Looking from above it has an opening of 42 x 48 and is 80" deep. Is that correct? I have a relatively small boat and my current slush tank has and opening of 48 x 49 and is 51" deep. I have two brailer bag...

Fisheries Supply might be a good start. They have a lot of a product called 'starboard'

If that's helps at all.

Re: Wooden poles
Thanks to a great tax return this year I decided to upgrade my poles (not to mention the re-wire) to aluminum.
Here in Ketchikan for a pair of 32 ft poles with rigid forestays, material and labor, around $2500.

Re: UHMW vs HDPE
My understanding of UHMW vs. HDPE (correct me if I'm wrong) UHMW is more of an engineered product. A lot denser and more resistant to photo degradation. (All plastic degrades when exposed to the sun) It would definitely be a better product in a 'high wear' situation (rub rails, anchor guards, etc.) ...

Re: Wooden poles
I've got wooden poles on my boat still. I think they are great! (Granted, I am in the same boat as you, not enough cash to turn them into aluminum) mine are 8 years old and have been maintained a little better by the sounds of it. Like furuno said though, bad poles can cost a guy a lot! But! on the ...

Re: 26ft troller help
Steelhead, I guess I assumed that if you weren't going to install a hayrack you wouldn't have poles either. Therefore no way of spreading out your gear in the water because you wouldn't be able to have tag lines. So you would have to rely on the length of your 'pole davits' to do that job. I guess I...

P.S If your using pipe davits make them long. Spread your gear out as much as you can for kings.

Re: 26ft troller help
Steelhead, yes, fish totes are they way to go for small boats. The kill bin: Only other thing I can say (and I'm new too so take my word for what it is) is don't put a hole in the bottom... put one closer to the top, say... within the top 25% of the box? (anyone else with thoughts on this?) the reas...

Re: 26ft troller help
For a fish hold you could just get an insulated fish tote. Basically a commercial grade cooler: http://www.plasticfishcontainers.com/plastic-containers/ <--- a simple search on google turned this up. you might find them on craigslist. They aren't cheap to start with but are perfect for what you need...
