Re: Oregon Vs California, input please
If you aren't relying on catching fish to pay your bills go ahead have a blast fishing rod and reel. If you really want to catch fish get rid of all that junk and copy the other guys, don't try to reinvent the wheel, many have tried in the past, just copy the guys who are successful. And downriggers...

Re: Oregon Vs California, input please
Thanks John, I'll likely pick up an Oregon license. Best bet would be to move out of the Bay Area and go north a bit. I sure wouldn't mind be closer to bodega bay. And fishing that deep on such a small boat isn't doable, I might be able to bounce the bottom in 50fa, before the weird currents start, ...

Oregon Vs California, input please
Looking for input from people who have fished california and oregon. I have been fishing california for a few years and it seems we are in a downswing of things, coupled with chopped down seasons, an ever increasing cost of living, and ridiculous liberal bs. I am exploring my options to keep fishing...

How do other states estimate abundance
I am curious how states other than CA estimate abundance of salmon. California uses jack count and they have been so wrong quite often, in fact last year they overstated the estimated amount by more than 100%. There has to be a better way to get a clearer picture of how many salmon are to be expecte...

Re: Trolling wire voltage testing.
I wouldn't worry about voltage too much in your first season, other factors will have a much bigger impact on how many fish you catch. I.e. Hook sizing, hoochie color, spread length, spoon type, troll speed for certain things, etc etc. just bond your boat, isolate the gurdies, take a voltage test an...

Re: Trolling wire voltage testing.
The way Malcolm explained it to me you want a hull potential of mid to low .8 and a wire voltage of high 7 to low 8, and drive it down to mid 5's (for kings). He then started on ion field and lost me but I just do whatever he says anyhow. I have swapped zincs to alum on some areas and while I have a...

Re: New Member
The learning curve is steep, forget everything you learned about how to catch salmon sport fishing, be prepared for a whole new set of problems, hanging crab pots, snapping wires, chasing floats. Don't forget how to punch a bait, if you want to be successful in bolinas that's the goto. It's fun thou...

Re: Trolling wire voltage testing.
The wire over the back to the bonding system method is for hull potential which is relative to wire voltage while trolling. what I've seen and what I've bothered Malcolm about is that hull potential will be slightly higher at the dock over the back of the boat at the dock, a bit less with the boat i...

Re: Wire Storage Methods?
There are springs/washers/nuts on both sides of the spool, even though the photo just shows one side.

Re: Wire Storage Methods?
Fill the 5 gallon bucket with water or some leads as ballast, and you can see the threaded rod, valve springs, washers and nuts, that squeeze the spool of wire tight so it comes off under tension, makes spooling solo easy, unspooling is relavticely easy too just have to turn the wire spool by hand v...

Re: Wire Storage Methods?
I built what I call a Gurdy horse. Basically a stand with a threaded rod that goes in the middle of the wire spools that they come in, and I use washers and old car valve springs and nuts to apply tension to the side of the spool much like a drag works on a fishing reel. Nuts on the threaded rod hol...

Re: New and Productive Spoons
Interesting, I prefer 7-8 claw points on my hoochies and my bait hooks, have tried smaller and lost fish although they were of the larger variety. The fish this year were small I agree, I used qi 5 straight points and had good success but did have a few bent spoons that fish managed the bend and Pop...

Re: New and Productive Spoons
I tried all of stans spoons and they work well. what size hook did you go with? I used 5/0 qi and the action worked well except the hooks would open on larger fish, later on I switched to 7/0 qi but did not run them long enough to determine if they fished as well versus the smaller books, although I...

Re: Rusty Troll Wire
I ran brass stops on everything, heavies and floats. There may have been a few that got a slight pinkish to em from what I recall but most were normal oxidized brass color, it's been a while so I forget. I have a nat voltage of .65-.7 somewhere in there and I drive it down to .53-.54 all season. Som...

Re: Rusty Troll Wire
I've been using Stan wests wire this season, the 1/19 is nice on the floats, wouldn't recommend it on the heavies. Using brass stops and it held up well to voltage being ran through it.

Re: Fiberglass bolts
Just installed fiberglass bolts, they don't take well to over torquing, seems they have no stretch at all, tighten too much and they snap. I think in the offseason I will remount with steel bolts and fiberglass washers and insulating tubes.

Re: Engine driven RSW systems
Thanks Johnny, I'll look into it for the next season if we can manage to get one, hopefully there are some fish around to even need the chilling.
