Re: I'm brand new
Talk your way onto a boat as crew. There's so much to learn. The only way to get started is to watch someone with experience.

Re: Shear boards
Most trollers use spreader (shear boards) to get the heavy wire, which is usually on the pole tip, away from the boat. Other wise, there is a good potential for fouling when the floats are pulled. Especially important when there is a strong side current. Or, buy a bigger boat with 40 foot poles. You...

Re: Spread Box Design?
Salty always has the neat stuff. I simply have a Rubbermaid tote with some old troll wire threaded through one side. I snap the A-kay on the troll wire, feed the leader and flasher into the tote, and hang the hook next to the A-Kay.

Re: How to keep spoons nice?
My 2 cents: Like Salty, everything is tied and ready to go before the season starts. It is all organized in the pit so I can replace quickly. A twisted leader gets tossed forward. I'll deal with it later Crimp your hooks at home on a vise. Nice even pressure doesn't stress the metal, too much Keepin...

Re: Black Box
You missed the point. The copper does not interact, to any large degree, with the zincs. The copper ions are sluffed off as the paint works plus the forward motion of the boat knocks them off. The boat's ion cloud is what the fish sense with their lateral line. Copper (which is relatively highly cha...

Re: Spectra alternative to trolling wire
Flyer, my hat off to you for creativity. I think in some applications it could work. However, the natural hull potential of the boat will be lost on the string verses wire. Off course, a black box is out of the question. I use it for tag lines so I know its tough. I might suggest a test. Fish wire o...

Re: Black Box
One more comment. You are dead right about not painting the rudder. Other than the engine (which is your ground), the rudder is the biggest piece of metal and the single biggest active surface in the water. Use it to catch more fish.

Re: Black Box
Bottom paint!!! I have a story. The boat wasn't fishing worth a nickel. I was getting out fished by boats that shouldn't have been on the water and guys that didn't know the difference between a hoochie and a spoon. I checked and tried everything; spent hundreds of dollars on the phone with Malcom. ...

Re: Leader Material
Yama 80#. I've tried it all; even 40# test and fluorocarbon. Yama lays in the leader box so easily, and trust me, the fish don't care about line test. Great thing about Yama is it turn black when it's stressed. Time for a new leader. I've found that the most important difference is keeping the leade...

Crawfish's post from Feb 1: When everything is right, my one man operation can keep up with the highliners with crew. However, Lulu is a steel boat and the smallest of things can, like corrosive wire/terminal, create brain snakes until you find the problem. One thing I am absolutely convinced is the...

Re: Black Box
Been a while since logging in. I will echo Salty's thoughts from Jan 9th. I've sent a lot of time with Malcolm and his black box has made me a lot of money. But, an understanding of the concept and how to tune the boat is absolutely critical in making the box work. Don't invest the time or money unl...

Re: Oregon Vs California, input please
I've spent a lot of time considering the same question. The issues are OR's kings are, for the most part, CA born and raised. So, restrictions in CA on the Klamath or Sac are felt in OR. There are seasons when OR wacks em, but that is not the norm. And, your second consideration, a good deal of OR's...

Re: NS or Stainless wire snaps
Yes, if you followed the thought that everything should be the same to prevent galvanic activity between dis-similar metals, then SS snaps and SS wire with SS stops is the way to go. I'm not going to do it. What I've found is consistency is more important, which means using all nickel silver (NiAg) ...

Re: LED flood instead of Sodium?
This has become a really good thread. I am not real happy with my set up, but it works. It's good to hear from others who have success and can share how they did it. I'm saving this for the time I have enough $$$ to change out the existing equipment, sometime in 2020 maybe. As far as the light color...

Re: NS or Stainless wire snaps
I had a conversation with an acquaintance several years ago where he observed his line voltage drop when he put a certain AK on his wire. He didn't pay attention to what kind of snap it was, he just threw it away. That conversation lead me to pay more attention to the assortment of SS and "stan...

Re: How do other states estimate abundance
Actually, CA uses different models for each of the primary runs. The Sacramento fall run uses jacks and adults, the late fall and winter runs look at jacks and grilse, and the Klamath looks at the 3 year average of 3 and 4 year olds (its called a geometrical average). F&W was off by 25%, not 100...

Re: LED flood instead of Sodium?
When I replaced the sodium lights several years ago, I learned that 1.) you want to buy American assembled LEDs verses Chinese. And 2,) you need to map the area to be illuminated and buy lights that match your area of interest. Chinese LEDs, as of a couple of years ago, were of poor quality in that ...

Re: Water proofing urethane
OK, after hours of research and phone calls, I found a product that seems to work thanks to Bob at Walh Marine's referral. VersaFlex manufactures a number of polyurethane products for use in a wide variety of applications. The product I tried is a patch product called VF HM/45. It comes in 1 and 5 g...

Re: Sealant that can be applied to wet surfaces?
It will be hard to find anything that seals wet and doesn't adhere permanently. I'd try Sika-flex first, put this stuff is an adhesive as well as a sealant. Silicon or 5200 is not going to seal if the surface is wet and or dirty; its a waste of time and money.
