Re: Wooden poles
There is nothing wrong with wood poles. I think they fish better than aluminum but that's for another conversation. If you have lateral cracks running with the grain you can shore them up with stainless steel banding or even hose clamps will work. Turpentine , boiled linseed and lamp black for oilin...

Re: Need Step by step on how to test line voltage
1: Lower a lead into the water.
2: Hook up your volt meter's negative to your engine block/bonding system.
3:Set your volt meter to read tenths of a volt.
4: Touch the positive lead to the trolling wire and read voltage.
That is your line voltage.

I forgot about the springs on the blocks for energy dampening. I don't think I have ever seen mine move.

Re: Leader lenght
In my experience elasticity while not being beneficial to a solid hook set makes up the difference in keeping the lightly hooked fish on the line. If you get a fish hooked in the jaw I don't think it matters much.

Re: Leader lenght
I agree with Salty stretch is very important to keeping them on. I also agree with the ability to scratch with lighter leader. I have only caught a few above 42 LBS but even with 90 I was able to get them. Typically my 8/0 hooks will start to open before 90 LB breaks. I think if they want to leave t...

Cool picture of the Lingcod.
So I have to ask what was your 5 biggest challenges outside of trying to keep the boat running for your first year?
Any data points you would like to pass on?

I used Spider Wire........
Once.
What's the consensus 3 Fathom Standard?
Or tapered to match trolling wire angle?

Fog.... Who doesn't like fog? I love fog, especially when you have to slam it in reverse and back over the top of your dog lines to prevent a collision. But my 2nd favorite is when its blowing 25 and foggy. Nothing like running through a fleet in the fog when there is sea clutter mixed with real tar...

Re: LED flood instead of Sodium?
The LED light bar I have on my boat will not compete with a 1000w HPS. It is OK for running into the anchorage and seeing buoys and boats but it won't throw near the light the HPS will. Mine draws 26 amps. I would be very curious to see how the 300W JKD is buying works. Please report after you get i...

Re: Hull vs. line voltage
Bonding: Simplest way to bond a boat is to run a section of 3/4" copper pipe through the boat. Flatten the ends and drill #8 or #10 holes to attach the wires with SS sheet metal screws to the things that need to be bonded; like rudder, shaft, fuel tanks, through hull fittings, the shoe, metal ...

Re: Spread question
I used to think if I could only have the "right" gear I would catch more. I have learned over the years, awareness of nuances of fishing are just as important if not more than gear selection. It's hard to explain but when you have two boats fishing the same gear often one guy will have 10 ...

Re: Spread question
JKD, Nice post. Been there, done that. Now I think ( not that it is the answer, just my evolution) that it is way more important to think about where the fish are, in the water column, on top of the humps or ridge, in the gulley, up current, down current, in which rip, and when, dusk, dawn, tide st...

Re: Isolating gurdies
I agree with both Salty & Crawfish on the listed items affecting change in your line voltage. A few others come to mind: Build-up of conducting material (grass, seaweed, gurry, jellyfish) on gurdy mounts that can defeat the isolation system you have devised; Type of Material used for straps bet...

False DWL. All kinds of things can affect your voltage: The depth of wire you are fishing; The length of your straps from wire to lead; The condition of your leads and or wire, The salinity of the water; The combination of zincs and metal Under the boat, and their condition; Leaks from bilge pumps ...

Re: Isolating gurdies
Most guy's use the break away method as it carries a more repeatable current than a zinc. If you need a big reduction in line voltage more than .2 of a volt use the line zinc.

Re: Hull vs. line voltage
With all this information I am attempting to begin bonding and isolating things. What is the proper way to bond the boat? All metals touching saltwater wires together including the fuel tank, and then wired to common ground? Should the engine be wired into the situation as well? Mast, fuel tanks, r...
