Re: Strong Dollar vs. Fish Prices

A strong dollar means a weak yen and euro which makes our products more expensive for them. It makes our exports less competitive, and it makes imports cheaper for us.
Holding other variables constant, a strong dollar will normally mean lower x-vessel prices for our fish.

Re: Electronics upgrade advice?

There was a thread on the Forum last year about the new Nobeltec CATCH program and upgrading to the new Furuno "black Box" network sounder that offers the new CHIRP sweep-frequency improvement in target resolution. Having fished with it now for almost two seasons, I would never go back. It...

Re: easthope gurdies

Sedna on the Forum here sometimes deals in Easthopes in Sitka. There's also Union Machine Shop in Ketchikan. and Mark Wumkes in Juneau at 907-957-0095 not only rebuilds them but re-engineers them better than new (for instance: stainless shafts with 7/8 hex-heads on the end, in case of needing to han...

Re: Which fishery is more fun and profitable?

Great comments Joe. Your last paragraph is my thinking exactly. We all might be getting a bit of a break in the expenses department if fuel prices stay down for a while. That will make the 'expensive trip up the inside passage and back' easier to take. One of the things I've noticed that saddens me,...

Re: first year... a REAL job.

Hi Rob, This looks just like yours. http://juneau.craigslist.org/boa/4760598680.html Sister boats maybe? I remember seeing your boat out in Cross Sound a couple years ago. Previous owner used to tie up at the Shoreline Barge often and I chatted with him several times. Looked like a lot of recent wor...

Re: Which fishery is more fun and profitable?

Another plug for Alaska has to be the incredible beauty of the scenery.
This picture is of Mt Fairweather taken from 50-miles away on the East bank of the Fairweather Grounds early July.

Re: Some objective advise needed about nets

Here's where you can answer some of those questions by comparing the earnings quartiles for the various fisheries. http://www.cfec.state.ak.us/quartile/mnusalm.htm

Re: Dickinson advice?

I think the Atomizer he speaks of is what Dickinson terms a Superheater. That's the 3-level cylindrical thingy that fits into the center of the fire-ring in the middle of the burner. Those (and burner rings) get all twisted eventually after years of use/heat. And, yes there is supposed to be draft h...

Re: Dickinson advice?

The draft issue and clean-burning with the Dickinson are counter intuitive. If the draft is too strong or if you use the fan a lot then the flame will migrate down into the pot area and quickly coke up all the burner parts in there with hard deposits that will both choke off the draft but also choke...

Re: King Fishery Closes Monday!

Freakin' amazing, eh? You've watched this for years. What other options for management can you suggest here? I'd like to offer whatever of my time and talents to work on some other fair way to manage this. Racing for the fish is not good. Just imagine the race next year in spite of whatever Patti. a...

Re: Easthope gurdie handles?

From an old thread there was this shop rebuilding Easthopes: http://www.drmachineinc.com/ And a couple of folks on the forum that I remember: Hottspott, in Canada, seems to specialize in refurbishing old Easthopes and putting them up on the forum for sale. fvsedna, in Sitka, seems to have some Easth...
