Re: Spooling new wire line.
Thanks for another great idea, Karl. I was initially thrown-off by Salty's post of the drawing where he referred to it as a 'spoiler' instead of a 'spooler'. I really don't need any help with spoiling trolling wire - I'm really good at it already. One of these will be a big help for me in a few weeks.

Re: Best rope for haul in lines
Kelper - I just bought a spool of medium-lay 9/16" poly-dacron for replacing my haul-up lines on my poles and various other rigging needs. I also use this for stabie haul-in lines and will add another line from my main stabie rope-to-chain thimble to the bow to take some strain off the pole rig...

Re: Spooling new wire line.
Thanks for everyone's input on wire blocks. Are those new, un-named trolling blocks made by "Loomis"? They appear to be a lot more substantial than the 'Kolstrand' and 'Shamrock' blocks I was familiar with and what are suspended from my current hayrack.

Re: Chain or Springs
Kelper - I have the same exact hull as Salty and [if I remember correctly] the previous owner had the anchor tackle set-up rigged with 3 or 4 fathoms of 5/8-inch galvanized chain right above the anchor (#8 Furfjord) and approximately 6 fathoms of 1/2-inch galvanized chain. I will be changing the 9/1...

Re: Running 2 deeps
Drew - I haven't tried it with the current boat, but on my last boat [with really long poles ] I got away with running two heavies (both 60s) by having an extra-long tagline on the tip and slightly shorter leaders on the inside heavy. If I remember correctly I had about 2 fathoms extra added-on to t...

Re: Chain or Springs
Thanks for the description. Eric. I will use your stabie chain rigging concept, but I think I'm going to mimic Walter and have mine come up to a block on each pole about an easy arm's length out from the pole bracket. I may change my mind after some experimentation, but I hope to mount some stabie h...

Re: how to use hydrotone
Be very careful with "Brasso" or "Red Bear" on newer bright metal spoons, especially those that have a bi-metal [50/50] finish. I suspect I must have been used to using these products on older, high-quality bright metal spoons, but I discovered that the contemporary electro-plati...

Trnaround - That's not preaching, that's talking good sense. I feel very badly for Jacob's brother after his flooding situation on his trip north. I hope his vessel can be recovered and he is able to get another start. I am an extremely fortunate person. I had a boat sink out from under my crew and ...

Re: alternative float switch
doryman - Thanks for the input. I will keep an even closer eye on my Water Witch installations. I would be pretty P.O.ed with those results regardless if I was drifting 80 miles offshore or sitting on the hook in a quiet anchorage trying to get some sleep. BTW, did your friend who works at the marin...

Re: alternative float switch
My Water Witch switches were each mounted directly on a fiberglass bulkhead so no bracket was used. I am still using Rule pumps but not the float switch brackets that came with them. As for electrical current(s) in the bilge, there wasn't any current that registered on my Fluke digital tester when t...

Re: alternative float switch
When I re-wired my boat over the last winter and spring - we replaced all of the Rule float-switches with "Water Witch" brand switches. I got them from Fisheries Supply. Check their different models out at: http://www.fisheriessupply.com/water-witch . I have had no problems with any of the...

Re: NAUD Electric Throttle Control
After today I am a lot more optimistic about finding parts and support information about Naud electric throttle controls. Yesterday I had a conversation about Bill Naud's engine controls with Jim Geraghty of Maritime Hydraulics here in Juneau and he found a message phone number in the Seattle area t...

Re: NAUD Electric Throttle Control
My electric throttle control on the Apex died while I was tied up to a dock. I had a break in my plastic pressure tubing. I had been doing some maintenance work on the port side of the engineroom and I believe I must have brushed-up against one of the tubing fittings on the throttle-control ram moun...

Re: LED lights
So far I have been very satisfied with my 'Rigid Industries' LED light fixtures. They are well made and easily adjustable. I have three of their 'Dually 2' fixtures arranged to light forward and aft of the troll cockpit and have found them to be quite handy when I am manuevering to tie to a dock wit...

lone eagle - I found the same information from Racor on the efficiency of the 30 micron filter at removing water. Once and Future - Thanks, those are all good points. I am not an expert, either. I am dealing with some lingering skepticism about the underlying recommendation. The engine's logbook ref...

Re: Onboard charging system
JYDPDX - In reference to your question about the pros of having a professional re-wire your boat vs. DIY - I went that way because of three main points: 1) I realised I didn't understand enough about DC power to do the job myself and I wanted to be certain that my system was balanced with the proper...

Re: Leaders
runninglate - To answer your question for the length of "tail" leaders for hootchies (the piece of monofilament with the hook that is attached to the BACK swivel of the flasher) - a lot depends upon your trolling speed. Every boat fishes flashers a little differently and experimentation is...
