Herring Source

Post by MattP »

I'm new to this fishery and have a question about the type of herring that guys are using. The only types that I have bought in the past are the really expensive packaged sport-type herring and the mushy horse herring we used for longlining. Do fish houses sell a troll grade herring or are guys that run herring using the expensive sport-type stuff? Thanks for any help.

Most processors with a plant should have packaged troll herring in different sizes available. Same stuff basically as the sport packages, but should be a little cheaper than store bought. Usually it will be in a little better shape for being in a colder freezer that isn't opening and shutting all day. Watch out for yellow fins, freezer burn, ice crystals, and milky eyes. reds and greens are the most popular sizes for threaded or E-Z baiters.
