Life Raft Regs
Does anyone know the rule on Life Rafts? Distance from shore etc... I have a 4 man that needs repacking and I also have a Dinghy on my rack? They raft expired in 2010. Am I ok with the Dinghy? I dont want to repack it this year because I really need to buy a new one but with my first season coming up I can think of other places I could spend the Money. Thanks

"I think" it's written.. no raft required if your boat is under 36 or (40ft?) + 2 POB or less + within 3 miles of shore. I could be wrong but my 36' gillnetter was boarded may times and I always passed. As to the dingy/punt question I belive a person can get an exemption from the USCG in lieu of the raft. The best way to answer this would be to contact the USCG dock side examiner. I will point out that they always lean towards the "over done" side of the question
