Commercial Salmon Trolling Forum

I found this video while wasting a firewood chopping break. I know that the video's focus is on the horrible weather that the boats are going through, but I was surprised to see what looked like regular trollers be the boats in question. Wonder if they were chasing kings? There is a naturalized Chinook stock there - the broodstock came from the Sacramento River. Same situation in Chile, thanks to farmed stock that originated in the Cowlitz and Kalama in WA. Maybe that skipper was training up to surf South America, too?

Maybe this is our new 'destination' fishery?

according to http://www.fish.govt.nz/en-nz/Commercia ... ethods.htm,describing New Zealands fisheries, "In trolling, baited hooks or lures are towed behind a boat and fish are pulled aboard when caught. This method is designed to target fast moving surface swimming fish such as tuna, marlin and kingfish", no mention of salmon. Another place said that spawning New Zealand chinooks, or quinnat salmon, are about sixteen pounds, much smaller than most. I doubt the the New Zealand government, which has some very strict fishery policies, would allow such a valuable sport fish to got to commercial guys. However, Chile's inside passage area has been high on my bucket list of exploration for some time. They are only starting to get any kind of decent regulation down there, so if a guy was to start something, now is the time. That would be interesting. Summer fishing up here, then winter fishing down there.
