Inquiry for ATA...

Post by fvsedna »

Inquiry for ATA or anyone who may have some Insight concerning with large Increase In GHL for the pollack fishery...this coming off the heels of last season's largest known king bi-catch for the fishery...I am wondering how relative this season's bi-catch will be to the pollack catch Increase....or can I rest knowing the Feds. & ADF&G are on top of the Issue & have a plan for reducing the king bi-catch?

"We base our GHL on the federal allowable biological catch. Since theirs went up, ours went up to," says Heather Fitch, the management biologist at the Alaska Department of Fish and Game office in Unalaska. "It's our biggest GHL yet."

Hi All:

Getting ready to head to Treaty tomorrow, so will refer you to our webpage - http://www.aktrollers.org under 'Learn About the Issues', there is a section for the NPFMC, who is addressing bycatch. I was at the December meeting and scheduled to be there last week, but had to cancel due to budget. Y'all might check your dues status...

Anyway, the bycatch section of our site will be tuned up this week, but there is already some salmon bycatch info there. Below the is the most recent motion by the NPFMC, which includes the concept of utilizing co-ops, which was suggested by the trawlers last December. It sounded interesting, but ATA will need more information on the details before taking a position.

While everyone is working to get a handle on this issue, one frustration with the Council is that it takes awhile to get changes put into place. Ironically, this is partly because it involves a lot of public process. Hopefully the Council will continue on the fast track it's been taking, and there will be new regulations in place sometime this year.

As you will see in the motion, this item will be on the April agenda. Hoping to be there.
