chinook bycatch letters to NPFMC

Post by entropy1 »

http://tholepin.blogspot.com/ has posted individual bottom trawl boats weekly chinook bycatch. There is NO chinook bycatch cap for bottom trawl in the GOA, only for pollock. He/she has pasted an alert from AMCC detailing when letters have to be in etc..

One boat, who is only observed less than 30%, killed 875 chinook in one week. That would be a good troll season would it not???

Thanks for the link. Hard to believe that it's legal, particularly in AK. It's interesting that the boat with the 875 chinook by-catch was second to last in number of observations. A good troll season, indeed!

The way things are going in SE this year 875 would be a good decade.

14 fish as the Salisbury Sound weigh station for the Sitka Sportsman's Association 58th Sitka Salmon Derby. A good year is 100 or more. Biggest was 30.5 lbs.

The Derby leader is 46 pounds.

I suspect the by-catch with an observer would be less than without one.
