UPDATE: Chinook Mitigation

Post by ata »

Hi All:

The state is in the final stages of processing the paperwork necessary to issue payments. They expect to have checks in the mail to qualified applicants sometime in February. The folks who work with ATA on the mitigation program are fantastic and we have no doubt that they are doing everything possible to get these payments to the fleet as quickly as possible. So, don’t spend it ‘til you get it, but keep the faith that things are in progress.

The state says they plan announce the 2014 recipients of mitigation infrastructure and enhancement grants in early March. This round, ATA supported ice improvements in Wrangell and water pipeline repair and operational funding for the Klawock Hatchery.

2014 is expected to be the last year of the mitigation program. However, if any funds are left over, ATA and the other stakeholders will continue to work with the state to identify projects that benefit those fishermen most impacted by low treaty Chinook quotas.

The ATA Board has been pleased to develop not only the direct payment program, but to also define a number of projects around the region that directly help trollers and all other fishermen. Nice to have ice in Pelican again - along with increased ice capacity in Craig, right? Improved delivery and safer storage of fuel, new and improved work floats, new hatchery production and infrastructure, new processing equipment - these are the types of lasting things ATA and the state have been able to accomplish for trollers, processors, and communities with the mitigation fund.

Keep Calm and Catch Winter Kings… and, please, check your dues status.
