2014 Taku River Chinook Forecast

Post by ata »

Hi All:

Sorry to report that it's likely there will be no directed Taku River fisheries this season. ADFG News Release below. Production in Taku and Stikine have been down, but are not too far below allowable levels for harvest. Hopefully things will turn around over the next couple of years.

Southeast Chinook quota announcement coming in early March. Will share the number as soon as we get the official word. I am cautiously optimistic that we'll be happier with the number than we were in 2013.

Stay tuned...

2014 TAKU RIVER KING SALMON FORECAST

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game announced today the following information concerning the preseason forecast for king salmon returning to the Taku River in 2014.
The 2014 preseason terminal run size forecast for large Taku River king salmon is 26,800 fish. A preseason terminal run forecast of this size does not provide an Allowable Catch (AC) for either the U.S. or Canada. Therefore, no directed fisheries will occur in early May. An in-season terminal run estimate will be produced in late May and the department will continue to monitor the returning run strength, but it is unlikely any directed king fisheries will occur in District 11 in 2014.

When the first in-season Taku River king salmon terminal run estimates are produced, a news release will be distributed as soon as possible with the estimated run size, resulting allowable catch, and information concerning potential directed king salmon fishery openings.

Thanks for the update Dale. Sure would like to see more areas open up to target sockeye i.e. in the Taku late June into July having spent time in Campbell river BC the past year.

We are not targeting sockeye in SE for a variety of political and conservation reasons. One of the great things about troll gear is that most of the time we can tweak the lures, presentation, depth, speed, location and minimize by-catch of stocks we want to avoid, like early sockeye.
