Final Comment Period for KSM Mine

Post by ata »

Hi All:

One of the largest copper mines in the world is currently slated for the headwaters of Unuk River, a transboundary river that produces many of our region's kings. The plan includes massive holding dams for tailings near the Nass River in Canada, which provides sockeye and coho for fishermen in Canada and Alaska.

Comment periods have been fast and furious and the developer submitted over 35,000 pages of information to wade through. ATA is concerned about the size and scope of this project and a lack of detail with respect to any mitigating harm to fish and wildlife. We are working with a diverse coalition of groups on this and similar mining developments planned along our border.

Final comment period opened this week and ends August 20th. Please take a few minutes to let Canada know what you think. It doesn't have to be long or fancy, it's just important to share your thoughts and concerns. http://www.ceaa-acee.gc.ca/050/details- ... tion=49262

You can also go to this site and urge Secretary of State John Kerry to engage with Canada on the issue of KSM and other large-scale mining developments planned near our shared watersheds. http://org2.salsalabs.com/o/6221/p/dia/ ... _KEY=17289

You can find additional information on ATA's webpage: http://aktrollers.org/ and this site will be updated with news and information regularly: http://www.salmonbeyondborders.org/

Please be sure your ATA dues are current - and consider an extra contribution each year for specific issues of concern to you.

Good fishing!
