New Slate of January Workshops in Sitka

Post by AMSEA »

AMSEA is holding another three day slate of workshops in Sitka this month. January 27 & 28 is a 12-Hour Fishing Vessel Drill Conductor workshop. This workshop contains all of the hands-on training of our USCG accepted 10-hour workshop plus an in-the-water practice session (weather permitting) where participants get practical experience with PFDs and immersion suits, survival techniques, and righting and boarding an inflatable life raft. This is a great opportunity to try these skills out before your life or the lives of your crew are depending on them. This workshop is free to commercial fishermen.

The evening of January 28, we'll have a two-hour Injury Prevention for Commercial Fishermen workshop. This workshop introduces the subject of ergonomics as it applies to work on fishing boat and covers topics like body mechanics, injury risk factors, work station and tool design, and exercises and stretches that can help prevent musculoskeletal injuries. You won't believe how man experienced fishermen have told us, "I wish I had known about this thirty years ago!" This is another free workshop for commercial fishermen.

We are excited to offer our new Mariner's First Aid & CPR workshop on January 29. This 8 1/2-hour workshop is tailored to the needs of commercial fishermen and other mariners. Participant's come away with a USCG accepted two-year certification issued by the American Safety & Health Institute. The cost for this workshop is $95.00.

The details for each workshop is posted below. We hope that Sitka trollers will join us for one or all of these valuable training opportunities. Everyone at AMSEA wishes you a safe and productive 2015!

Fishing Vessel Drill Conductor

The Alaska Marine Safety Education Association (AMSEA) will offer a 12-hour Fishing Vessel Drill Conductor workshop in Sitka on Tuesday, January 27, 2015 from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM and Wednesday, January 28, 2015 from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM. The workshop will be conducted at the Northern Southeast Regional Aquaculture Association (NSRAA), 1308 Sawmill Creek Rd. This workshop is an excellent opportunity for commercial fishermen and other mariners to gain hands-on training with marine safety equipment and learn best practices for surviving emergencies at sea.

Instructors, Hope Merritt, Coral Pendell, and Rick Petersen, will cover cold-water survival skills; EPIRBs, flares, and maydays; man-overboard recovery and firefighting; immersion suits and PFDs, helicopter rescue, life rafts, abandon ship procedures, and emergency drills. The session on Saturday morning contains an in-the-water practice session, weather permitting. In-the-water practice gives mariners practical experience with utilizing PFDs and immersion suits, employing survival techniques, and righting and boarding an inflatable life raft.

AMSEA Drill Conductor workshops meet the training requirements for documented commercial fishing vessels operating beyond the federal boundary line. This workshop is offered to commercial fishermen at no cost, thanks to support from the U.S. Coast Guard, the Alaska Department of Commerce, Community & Economic Development, and the National Institute for Occupational Safety & Health.
