Oregon Salmon Meeting in Newport
Oregon Salmon Meeting in Newport
Did anyone attend the Newport meeting today (Feb 26th) - if so did they discuss opening dates for the Oregon Coast?
Re: Oregon Salmon Meeting in Newport
I heard March 12th we should have the first set of proposals
Re: Oregon Salmon Meeting in Newport
I went to the CA fish and wildlife meeting. They presented the escapement and impact rates for the three major runs in CA; Sacramento Fall run, Klamath, and winter run. All returns met or exceeded escapement goals. Impact rates are highest allowable by rule. NMFS said we should have as much time on the water as last year or more. Winter run may have restrictions in the south, but the commercial guys don't care. Winter run is impacted primarily by the sporties and south of Arena. Water conditions being what they are, we're expecting a continuation of the northern shift.
For Oregon, I anticipate a good number of Sacramento fish in your area this year and fewer restrictions on the Klamath stock.
One positive comments made of the first time in public was the net pen projects are having a positive influence on return rates. (who knew)
Council meeting is the week of March 16. The 2015 opinions will be developed and issued for public comment after the meeting.

Re: Oregon Salmon Meeting in Newport
Does anyone know if any trolling is going on West coast or BC right now?
Re: Oregon Salmon Meeting in Newport
OR starts in April. Not sure of the exact date. I should be there.
Re: Oregon Salmon Meeting in Newport
3/11/15 COMMERCIAL TROLL SALMON ACTION NOTICE: The National Marine Fisheries Service in consultation with the Pacific Fishery Management Council, the State of Oregon, and fishery representatives has taken the following in-season management action to modify the previously scheduled March 15 commercial troll Chinook Salmon opening off Oregon:
The area between Cape Falcon and the Oregon/California Border will NOT open for commercial troll salmon fishing for the period of March 15 through March 31. The area will open for commercial troll for Chinook Salmon fishing within this area for the period of April 1 - 30. Fishery managers agreed that this was needed to reduce impacts on Klamath River fall Chinook in order to provide more flexibility in the other season options that are under development. Vessels are limited to no more than four spreads per wire; hooks are restricted to single point, single shank barbless hooks; and Chinook must be 28 inches or larger to be retained.
Within the area adjacent to Tillamook Bay, between Twin Rocks and Pyramid Rock, and inside the 15 fathom depth contour, only adipose fin-clipped Chinook may be retained or on board a vessel while fishing prior to August 1.
Seasons from May 1, 2015 through April 30, 2016 are currently being developed. Season alternatives will be reviewed and a final season recommendation made at the Pacific Fishery Management Council public meeting in Rohnert Park, California by April 15.

Re: Oregon Salmon Meeting in Newport
The kicker is the overall 2014 Klamath return was one of the best (13th largest over the last 37 years). CA F&W's numbers are "1.7 times the number projected returned" (160,000 returns vs 96,000 projected). Their concern is the number of 4 year olds was lower than projected. Therefore, they're going to make us pay even though there is 100,000 Klamath Chinook projected to return in 2015 based on the 22,248 jacks ("which exceeded the average of 18,775") returning last year (another banner year we'll watch from the sidelines).
