ACTION ALERT: SB 42

Post by ata »

Hi All:

Your help is urgently needed to prevent the AK Legislature for creating a personal use priority in the state. This would mean that over 100 personal use fisheries in the state would have priority harvest second only to subsistence, and over sport and commercial. This is contrary to the Board of Fisheries' intent when they established personal use.

Please read the attached action alert and consider weighing on this issue. There is a committee hearing next week (April 1), where you could testify via teleconference. Or, there are several other options for letting legislators know what you think.

ATA supports personal use fisheries, but there is no need to establish a special priority that could become unnecessarily divisive between fishermen. Personal Use fisheries are not based on a critical need for food in times of shortage, like so many subsistence fisheries around the state are. Therefore, personal use fishermen should be held accountable for day to day conservation needs, just like their sport and commercial neighbors.

Thanks for your help!

There was a lot of testimony at meeting and twenty some folks didn't get to testify because meeting ended at 5:04 pm.You can still write the Senate Resources committee to comment. One theme that came up numerous times was we have the Board of Fish process already in place to deal with allocative issues we don't need the Legislative branch ie politics in the mix mucking around.

Hi All:

HB 110 is the House version of SB 42. It will be heard in House Fisheries Committee Tuesday Apr. 7 10am - the meeting will be teleconferenced and you can go to your Legislative Information Office if you'd like to testify. Information here:
http://www.akleg.gov/basis/Bill/detail/29?Root=HB%20110

The House side hasn't added ATA's comments to the documents folder yet, but you can read them in the senate materials here:
http://www.legis.state.ak.us/basis/get_ ... docid=5962

Other bills that ATA is closely following include ADFG and ASMI budgets; HB 112 which would merge CFEC into ADFG; HB 92 to require labeling of GE foods; HB 53 broadcast spraying of pesticides; HB 38 Invasive Species; HJR 16 Mining in Transboundary watersheds; and HB 103 Board of Fisheries generated proposals.

With the current budget crunch things aren't moving real fast, but there are definitely some areas of concern for the fishing industry if the legislature starts checking off tasks on their worklist. If any of the topics above are of interest to you, I encourage you to monitor the legislative website and participate through letters, online personal opinion messages, and testimony at hearings. http://akleg.gov/index.php

Cheers!
