Does anyone have a good recipe for a sauce to put on your wood outrigger poles to keep them in good shape - I use to have one but it has been awhile and can't find it. I was thinking about spraying them with penetrating epoxy but on second thought I'm afraid that might make them brittle? The sticks are 40' long and are very dry right now. I would appreciate your thoughts...

One recipe I've used for both poles and wood deck is:

1 part boiled linseed oil
1 part turpentine
1 part pine tar

I've heard it called 'Boat Soup'

Some people heat it up a little to get the pine tar a little more viscous. I used to just mix the pine tar and turpentine and then add the linseed oil after the first two mixed. Apply as many coats as you want. the more the merrier I think.

that is a pretty good mix, I remember the pine tar smell from the halibut schooners coming into Ketchikan, they used it all the time. I used it on cross country skies until fiberglass ones came on line. You can't go wrong with that mix.
