Cold Plate Refrigeration

I purchased a salmon troller last year that has a cold plate refrigeration system in the ice hold. This system was not put in with the intent to be a Freezer, only meant from what I have been told to hold the ice over longer and with better consistent temperature. I have been struggling with the water circulation the past year but believe I am soon to have this working properly. Next I have to recharge the system as I am sure the freon will need to be recharged. That said the two gauges are holding pressure in the system when off, and the system has not been run for over 10 years. Might be a spit in one hand and wish in the other and see which fills up first but an hopeful to get this up and running this years. I have a compressor, condenser, pump, sight glass, cooling grid, (probably not the right terms), on the system and the cooling is from sea water that circulate around the cooling manifold/grid.

Each plate appears to have a valve leading into it or a regulator. I have four plates approximatley 9' by 3' in dimension.

Looking for any insight, other than the obvious......of take it out ......to maintain it an trouble shoot anticipated start up problems or lessons learned.

Thanks for any help or suggestions all will helpful and help me learn.........Ocean is a blowing up down here in southern Oregon!

This comes under the “if it ainin’t broke, don’t fix it category” It is an old Tec system and most likely has very expensive refrigerant in it. Look on the top of the expansion valve and it may indicate what refrigerant is in the system. White=R 12, green= R 22 purple=502 another way if you have a pressure temp chart is look it up the pressure that corresponds with the ambient temp with the system off. In any case it is very hard to trouble shoot a system you can’t see.

Cold plate is very efficient, I highly reccomend finding a manual or paying an expert to teach you how to maintain it. If you dont want the system, I will happily uninstall it for you...
