Preparing for the worst possible day…

Post by AMSEA »

We had a good turnout for yesterday’s F/V Drill Conductor workshop. Among the participants was a young couple trolling with their two youngsters onboard. Mom and Dad attended with the kids and both gave the workshop a “thumps-up”. They feel better prepared and have a better understanding of how to keep their family safe in case of an onboard emergency.

Trolling is already underway in Sitka, but it’s not too late for Sitka fishermen to attend a Drill Conductor workshop. AMSEA has a workshop scheduled in Sitka on June 11. This workshop includes:

• Cold water survival skills
• EPIRBs, flares, and maydays
• Man overboard recovery
• Fire fighting
• Immersion suits and PFDs
• Emergency drills
• Helicopter rescue
• Life rafts
• Abandon ship procedures

The cost is FREE for commercial fishermen (after scholarship from DCCED and NIOSH) and $175 for all others. All mariners are welcome!

The workshop will be conducted at the NSRAA, 1308 Sawmill Creek Rd., Sitka, AK 99835. You can register online or call AMSEA at (907) 747-3287. We hope to see you there!
