Engine Maintenance

Post by Jon »

I have a Detroit Diesel 3-71 with Capital 3:1 transmission.

Here's my maintenance schedule:

Every 125 Hours
  • Change Engine Oil & Filter
  • Change Primary Fuel Filter
  • Drain Water Trap
  • Check Transmission Fluid
  • Check Battery Fluid
Every 250 Hours
  • Change Secondary Fuel Filter
  • Change Coolant
  • Check Belts
  • Check Valve Clearances
  • Oil Alternator

Every 500 Hours
  • Check Coolant Hoses

Every 1000 Hours
  • Change Transmission Oil
  • Clean Coolant System
  • Test Injectors
  • Check Engine Alignment
  • Clean Blower Screen
  • Check Airflow from Airbox drains
Here's a printable version you can use to keep a log of your maintenance: PDF checklist.

When you acquire a boat, i highly suggest doing everything on the list as soon as possible. When I bought my boat, the person who was running it said the oil pressure gauge was faulty and I made the mistake of believing them when in fact the engine was simply running out of oil. The first time I looked at the blower screen on my boat it had 1/4" of gunk covering the entire screen, except for a 1/2" around the edges of the screen. It must have been thousands and thousands of engine hours since it had been cleaned.

If there's anything else you can think of I'll add it to the list.
