Trolling pole idea's

Post by Cfood »

Been looking around for a used set in the 30 ft range, but obviously limited by location (San Francisco) and shipping logistics. Looking for some thoughts on building a pair, aluminium being the obvious choice. We mainly pot fish (crab), but would like to add some Chinook trolling. Looking for some thoughts on size of tubing and sleeving from larger diameter to smaller. Smallish 38ft boat with 2 spool gurdies. Have good access to material and welder if that helps

I added 9' to my poles and got pro. advice on the project.. 2' overlap, fillet weld around the joint. And 4 plug welds about 5" apart and each one staggered 90 degrees around the pipe. I'm hesitant to give you schedules cos mine seem to lighter than most guys. I threw in a photo, hope it makes sense. Tarheel Fab told me how to do it and they've got a sound reputation

You may not want the tips on when crabbing. I had a gill net / troller combo and when net fishing I didn't want the extensions on the poles so I didn't have to deal with the tag lines etc. I had a 3 ft sleeve welded inside the tips (same size schedule tip as the pole) that fit inside the pole so I could remove 1 bolt and slide the tips off with all extra troll gear and haul-up lines on the tip. Because you'll have fore and aft stays on the tips, coming apart isn't a concern. The bolt stops them from spinning. Be sure that your extensions start above the stabilizers (planing fish, flopper stoppers, or what ever you want to call 'em). Your haul-up lines for the short pole should be in line with the stabie line so your weight of the roll on the fish is transfered directly to the mast and not bending your pole in the middle.

Thanks Mike. We just finished rigging today. Won't know what we did right, or wrong, for a while. Big project starting from scratch.

I am with Mydona on bolting versus welding on your tip sections. Much easier to fix if you have an accident. I thru bolted twice at 90 degrees. If you decide to put in longer or shorter tips it is easy to adjust.

We ended up going with 20ft of 3" sch 80 on the bottom section and thru bolting 18ft of 2.5 sch 40 on the tips. 2ft of overlap. Realistically the starboard main section will have to be removed for crabbing, port side optional. lower section extends 6-8 inched above the yoke. looking for some fresh ideas on "frog legs" or straight pipe stops to lock the poles to the downside

I have a pipe with a smaller pipe inside. When out I run a half inch bolt through both and slip on a nut. Takes a second. Do not try to lift the pole with bolt in.

Hey Andy. Boat is looking real nice. Yes it is a big project making all that from scratch! Sounds like you got er figured out nicely though! You're further up the learning curve then I. I just put the third set of tips on my poles. Damn crab gear

hey lone eagle, did those poles you had pictured go on a 26ft fiberform? I bought a 26ft fiberform from Winchester bay named Kats Toi with 17ft poles with welds exactly like the ones in the picture...If so maybe you could help with advice re rigging it?

@cfoot in response to your posted picture.
U really want to support the pole tips when they are down in the fishing position. The poles need 2 supports at the tip. They are called a "forestay" and "tip haul up line."
The "forestay" runs toward the bow to oppose the aft ward pull from your fishing wires.
The "tip haul up line" goes through the block on your mast and to a tie off clete. The pic shows a blue green line going about 3/4 out the pole. That line should go to the tip of the pole.

A couple of things to think about. You will get better support on the tips if you run a bridle from the tip to where you have your haul in line. Thread a trolling block in the bridle and shackle your haul in line to the shackle. You get two points of support and your tips are less likely to bend down on a crab pot.

Second, think about double blocking the haul in lines. Double blocks make it three times easier to pull up the poles.

It is hard to see any aft stays. If not, its a good idea for charging into a mean ocean.
