Finally I got the opportunity to visit Yakutat and I was not disappointed, nicest people with great attitude- even the young ones seemed to love their town. Would be a great place to live if the grounds were closer, we were trolling 100 miles west of there...in sight of Area E and Kayak island.
Iced up in Sitka and ran NW across Fairweather grounds to a spur SE of Suckling. In 70f we found large ling, rock, halibut and kings. My skipper fishes these grounds every year, passing on the fairweather preferring solitude, not finding fish on Pamplona Spur which is a lot closer to Yakutat. The trip back to Yakutat took 22 hours. Fished the 29th thru july3rd back in time for beer and fireworks on the 4th. Unfortunately the season was called over on the 5th so we were done with just 260 fish.
I'll fish my own boat down south this year for tuna , next year I might go back north on my boat- Elfin Cove would work well for an old guy like me

I found your fishing timeline interesting. The rest of the troll fleet had to wait for the 1st of July to begin fishing.

JKD, I should clarify that I was up as a deckhand last year, though I have fished my own rig in years past and did not cheat the fleet

Ya, what? June 29th thru July 3rd? Sounds like you were fishing two days early to me....
