The young captain

Post by yak2you2 »

There once was a young captain, who's courage and faith in his crew was like no other. He was considered somewhat of an oddity amongst those who collected the same fish that he did, preferring to stay out of the spotlight, he remained humble and focused on his goals. In an age where others where others were boastful, and flashy, attracting around themselves the finest of crews, he sought out the quiet, the sickly and old, and those with reputations that preceded them from lives long lived in the wrong directions, to be his crew.
It was difficult going at first, the oddly collected crew didn't work very well together, always bickering about where to fish, or how to fish, and they never would trust the young captain's leadership, even when the course they should follow was obvious.
Eventually though, the crew of misfits realized that their young captain seemed to have an uncanny ability to always make the right decisions that would lead them to fish, no matter how unlikely the place seemed. It was their faith in what they could not see about this man, that ultimately pulled them together into a real crew. He always knew what to do, no matter what the situation. He calmed their fear in storms, fed and took care of them when fishing was bad, and taught them to get along, and to believe in the best of each other. His calm, steady voice, and rock steady nature soon shaped the crew into a finely tuned team of professionals, that soon became the envy of all the other captains and crews.
word of the young captain's steady successes coupled with his easy going nature soon traveled and many came from all over seeking to join his crew, in hopes of one day being like him, He had become the talk of the fleet. This, of course, became an unbearable source of irritation for the old captains, once the envy of all for their fancy cloths, boastful stories, and extravagant spending sprees. Soon they became so enraged by blind jealousy, that they could stand it no longer. They conspired together, and decided that the time had come to kill the young captain, and his crew of misfits, once and for all.
Word of this reached the young captain, and he was given an opportunity to leave town and abandon his crew and save his own life. Instead of doing so, he went straight to the old captains, and said, "my crew has done nothing wrong, if you must punish someone, punish me," and they did.
True to his faith to the bitter end, the young captain gave up his life for his little crew of misfits, and in so doing he awakened an undying will to do good inside all people, the likes of which the world had never known.
Want to join his crew? all you have to do believe in him.
Take a moment and think about who's birthday it is soon, and think about what the young captain has done for you.

God bless, and Merry Christmas !!

Excellent story! Well worth bringing to the top of the list from time to time -- even if it's not December.

I have a friend who keeps pointing out that this fisherman was a gillnetter.

If so, why are we eulogizing a gillnetter on the trollers forum?

Perhaps there is a larger perspective here that, like most of the fish, eludes me.

Or, on the other hand, is it certain that this skipper was a gillnetter?
