Trollers coming off the water can attend a pair of training workshops for commercial fishermen in Sitka near the end of September. AMSEA has a ten-hour Fishing Vessel Drill Conductor workshop scheduled for September 28, 2015 from 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM. This course meets the US Coast Guard drill conductor requirements for fishing vessels. The cost is FREE for commercial fishermen (after scholarship from the U.S. Coast Guard) and $175 for all others. The workshop will be conducted at the Alaska Public Safety Academy, 877 Sawmill Creek Road.

Don Bloswick, Ph.D., an expert in ergonomic injury prevention will conduct a free injury prevention workshop in Sitka on Friday, September 25, 2015. The workshop title is "Strains, Sprains and Pains: Ergonomic Injury Prevention for Commercial Fishermen & Other Workers". Donald Bloswick, Ph.D., will instruct participants on ways to avoid musculoskeletal problems common in commercial fishing and other industries. Participants may bring a mat to practice some exercises to "tune up" their bodies before, during and after the season.

Dr. Bloswick is an Adjunct Professor of Bioengineering and a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Utah. He is an author of more than thirty-one scholarly papers on ergonomics and injury prevention. Dr. Bloswick in an expert in the field and has written two papers with AMSEA Executive Director, Jerry Dzugan, on injury prevention in the commercial fishing industry.
This workshop will be held from 5:00 PM to 6:30 PM at the Sitka Sound Science Center, 834 Lincoln Street. This workshop is offered free of charge thanks to funding from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
